me too. Though I admit I pictured Teabing smaller, like a really fragile old man. Sir Ian is not a giant but looks strong. But he's an actor, he'll do whatever to fit the character.

Actors are amazing. The good ones anyway. ;)

Really? I thought the book was very fast paced. With the short chapters you just keep going and going, it was almost addictive and I liked that.

I'm hoping the movie isn't the opposite for me but the reviews here are easing the doubt alot so that's nice.

Looks like it kicked ass this weekend:

"Da Vinci Code" unlocks $224 mln in world sales
Sunday May 21 12:46 PM ET

All the protests and all the bad reviews could not prevent "The Da Vinci Code" from recording a $224 million worldwide opening, the second-biggest debut ever at the global box office, its distributor said on Sunday.

The controversial adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling novel, the story of a Vatican cover-up involving Jesus Christ and his supposed offspring, sold about $77 million worth of tickets at movie theaters in the United States and Canada during its first three days, according to Columbia Pictures.

Box-office watchers had predicted a North American opening of between $50 million and $80 million for the most eagerly awaited movie of the year.

The biggest North American opening this year had been $68 million for "Ice Age: The Meltdown" seven weeks ago. But "The Da Vinci Code" numbers were still far from the $115 million record held by 2002's "Spider-Man."

"The Da Vinci Code" earned about $147 million overseas, the biggest international opening ever. The previous record was last year's "Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" with $145 million, Columbia said.

The total haul of $224 million ranks No. 2 behind the $253 million tally for the "Star Wars" movie, the studio said.

Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp ., released the $125 million film in 90 foreign markets, following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

The strong sales came despite -- or because of -- an onslaught of protests and publicity not seen since another religious movie, Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," earned $84 million domestically during its first weekend in February 2004. It grossed $612 million worldwide.

Brown's fictional premise -- that Jesus Christ had a child with Mary Magdalene and that their blood line survived through the ages -- was a huge hit at bookstores, with more than 40 million copies sold around the world.

But some Christians, particularly Catholics, were angered by the story and have mounted a high-profile offensive against director Ron Howard's movie adaptation, which stars Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.

A Catholic lay organization, the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, took out full-page ads in USA Today on Friday calling for worshipers to stage prayer vigils outside at least 1,000 theaters nationwide.

Other church groups have welcomed the opportunity to use the film as a starting point for discussion about the Bible, as has American Atheists, which says the same level of scrutiny applied to the book and film also should be used to question all other religious claims.

On the heels of the Cannes premiere of "The Da Vinci Code," critics joined the chorus of naysayers, overwhelmingly lambasting it as "grim," "unwieldy" and "plodding." It did get a respectable review from America's best-known movie critic, Roger Ebert, who called it "preposterously entertaining."

Sony, the film's producer Imagine Entertainment, and the movie's stars have stressed that the movie is merely entertainment -- and moviegoers appeared to agree.

"The book became more than a book and the movie became more than a movie," said Valerie Van Galder, Columbia's president of domestic marketing. "It became a perfect storm."

I loved the book too. Some of my friends won't read it because it's 'sacriligious'. I disagree totally with them on that point. But I can't change their minds.
Tom Hanks as Langdon? I don't see it, but he's surprised me before.
Jean Reno is ALWAYS great.
Ian McKellen IS Teabing!
I'm really looking forward to the movie.

I know... I have this movie on DVD and I've never finished it. I saw it once in the theater and then sort of got it over with. Heh. I find the second half of the movie tiring somehow.

I'm gonna go watch it today :woot:
I really liked the book, but I had so much epectation when it came to Langdon.. and they give me tom Hanks... he's like total opposite of what I had in mind ;)

Aha! And now I know why I thought Harrison Ford would be good. I know he's too old really but that's who I'd have cast...maybe if I had a time machine and could go back a few years!

Tom Hanks is fine and I quite like him but I just can't envisage him in the role...but hey, at least he's not Russell Crowe. Having read this thread now I'm thinking Viggo Mortensen would be pretty good in the role.

As for Sophie...Julie Delpy would be a good choice I think.

I really liked Angels and Demons - not as much as The Da Vinci Code but that's probably because the writing is so similar it seemed a bit of a rip off, even though it came first

You never know, maybe it'll go the way of His Dark Materials and have all references to religion cut out

i actually love that tom hanks was cast as langdon. langdon has a lot of intellegence and depth and heart in his character and i can see tom hanks acting him very very well.

who would be sophie? that one is kind of puzzling me.

exactly! that's why I said earlier it was more about Sophie than Langdon, I had the feeling there was actually more of Audrey in it all... like it was her "journey" with Langdon as a background, which felt strange since Tom's acting was more like: "yeah, whatever". Is it only me who felt that they were kinda emotionless about everything and actually only Leigh showed a little bit of excitement? nope just me?

I never pictured Langdon as physically sexy or hideous looking while reading, so Hanks seems like a good choice to me. I'm not familiar with Delpy's work. I've only seen her as a guest on Graham Norton's show, but she seems lovely. :D

When the news about The Da Vinci Code the movie came out, i was actually thinking of Viggo Mortensen as Langdon. He could play that role really well, plus he's got all the stuff Langdon has - that cleft, the body. It's just him. I agree that Tom Hanks was miscast. No matter how good he isas an actor, if the role doesn't suit him, he'll not stand out.

Paul Bettany  he made Silas look hot. Silas' supposedly a huge scary creepy Albino. Though, he played his role really really well. I thought he actually has the best performance in the movie, but he's the character that is colsest to the character on the book.

RE: Angels and Demons, that is my favourite novel! I would be thrilled if it'll be a movie, but please not Tom Hanks again. :(

Yeah I wasn't thrilled with Tom Hanks being chosen for the part but hopefully it won't bother me so much while watching the movie. I agree that Paul Bettany looks perfect but I pictured someone more portly for Teabing. Actually when I saw Ian McKellen was in the cast I immediately thought he'd be playing the grandfather so I was surprised when I found out that wasn't the case.

I jsut got back from seeing it. I liked it, the book was better but I enjoyed the movie. although I didnt like Tom as Longdon it just didnt seem right to me thats not a all how I pictures him when I read the book. I loved Paul in the movie he played Silas perfectley. I also didnt really like the ending of the movie either
