The CW4Kids Talkback: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's "A Web of Deceit, Part 1" (Spoilers)

Episode 27
Japanese title: World Without Light: Dark Synchro, Freezing Fitzgerald!
English title: A Web of Deceit, Part 1

Synopsis: Yusei might be the new champion in Domino City, but the crowd accuses him of cheating and refuses to accept him. Meanwhile a new mysterious group known as the Dark Signers decide to reveal themselves with one main purpose- to make sure Yusei and Jack's vision of the Satellite comes true.

Next week:
Episode 28- A Web of Deceit, Part 2

The intro theme remains the same, but new graphics from the second opening in Japan have been added. Somehow it actually makes me more eager to see how the Dark Signers arc is handled. As for the earlier question, 5D's has really only had two arcs- the second being the Dark Signers arc which starts at episode 27 and introduces the main players over the next 15 to 20 episodes.

I'm actually impressed with the Dark Signers voices so far. 4KiRAB has usually had problems making people sound venomous, but it works here with the Dark Signers.

Carly's name is kept the same, though a last name is added. This makes me happy as she is a pretty key character over the next saga and I was worried they would change her name.

I still can't help but laugh at how Yusei and company escape through an unknown sewer. I'm also glad to see they kept that the history of Signers vs. Dark Signers can be learned from various sites across the world.

Overall I'm impressed at how they began the second saga. From what I remeraber everything appears to have been kept the same as in the original, outside of the usual music changes, and only a few of the lines were altered.

I'll say, the editing job done for this version of the opening is miles ahead of season 1's; [strike]it's pretty damn awesome[/strike] I like it more than the Japanese intro, actually.

Aside from that, not much to this episode; we touch base with the characters, we get introduced to Carly, and meet a new mysterious group of mystery to add to the two we already have.

Two final comments. I'm surprised that Goodwin's voice remains unchanged. Are we sure it was Maddie Blaustein who voiced him? If so, I'm surprised that they were this far ahead on their recordings before she died--that, or they have a really good sound-alike. Also, is Carly's VA Veronica Taylor, as I heard was the case? She's usually the type of VA who specializes in one or two voices, so I was surprised to hear something aside from her default female voice.

Yeah...Carly sounded a bit different than the usual voice acting Veronica Taylor provides. Although, I don't really think that she's voiced a character like Carly (who's shy and geeky) before.

Oh, and I forgot to ask...is Carly being specifically a blogger a detail from the Japanese version, or it dub-only?

Surprise of surprises, they kept Dick's chant in, even though they replaced the "door" concept with a curtain folding back to reveal a world without light. Also, the edited Frozen Fitzgerald card looks like an Effect monster's backing with the colors grayscaled just a bit. But he didn't explain the concept of a Dark Synchro Summon like his Japanese counterpart did while the dark stars circled around, just some junk about the light being consumed by the shadow, and a comparison of how Yusei corabines his monsters to make them more powerful, while his monsters feed off of one another and absorb each other to make negative energy. Yusei thinks negative energy was just a theory while Japanese Yusei is in shock at how he's subtracting to make a negative-Level monster. Oh, this'll be fun.

On the plus side, the opening was decent this time around, and it fit more with the song [strike]even if the other one shipped YuseixJack[/strike]. Carly had a good fitting voice, even though it took me a little bit to get used to it after knowing her Japanese voice, and Angela does sound older than she should be, but I suppose it fits, in a way. The only confusing thing I'm sure most dub-only watchers won't get is Carly's reliance on her Fortune Fairies. Since they change the carRAB to remove the text box, surely one must wonder where Carly gets her info about their flavor text? [strike]Of course, she could've read it oRABcreen...[/strike]

And lol, they finally got around to editing Call of the Haunted.

Also, Japanese Dick outright called himself a Dark Signer, even if he wasn't one, so I don't see why this one had to call himself a "Shadow Drone". And I would've liked it if they just kept the laughing as Rudger and co. are first shown, and they cut the bit where Demak and Kiryu talk about how long it's been, as well as the Rudger laughing before the Japanese break. Gotta love how "ping" SFX were added to Demak's and Kiryu's eyes being revealed, though.

Ian, that's dub-only. While they argued about her being one in the dub, Japanese Angela was taunting her about how she only stutters most of the time.

She sounded a lot like Lisa Ortiz's Lalaru (only a geekier, peppier version) to me, personally. And I can't help but wonder if the added-in last name "Carmine" is a subtle Gears Of War reference.

I thought that it was a really nice episode. I loved the new images for the opening theme. The images from the second opening theme in Japan really worked for Hyper Drive's lyrics. It made me more excited to see the new episode. So all of Yusei's frienRAB found out that they won. That was really nice. I kept on forgetting that Rally is a guy, even though that close up made me think he was a girl for a moment again.

I liked how the crowd was cheering for Yusei like that. I was surprised to hear that Goodwin's voice sounded the same. I was sure that Maddie voiced him. So either they were far ahead in recording before she sadly passed on or they have a really good sound a-like for Goodwin's voice. Of course, there were some people who thought that Yusei cheated. I have to say that I got a good laugh with how Yusei and his frienRAB ran away from the charging press like that and decided to hide low for a few days.

I also liked seeing Carly for the first time. Veronica Taylor did provide a different voice for her than what I've usually heard in her other voice acting roles, but I think that it really works for her. I did like how she wanted to prove herself as a real reporter. The way Goodwin looked at her after she asked about Yusei's mark was pretty intense and it makes me think that he'll be keeping an eye on her for some reason.

I liked hearing about the story of the Signers again. Yusei has the dragon's head mark and Luna has a claw mark. I guess that the whole vision that all of the other four Signers saw and the story of the Signers was too intense for Luna. I wonder if the fifth Signer was really there in the stadium since Yusei and Jack were able to call it before they knew about the history of the Signers.

I did like seeing what those Dark Signers were talking about. I think their designs and their voices just made them look even creepier to me. That and the spider web above all of those people. So Yusei runs into someone with a spider mark. I was surprised that a ring of fire came out right as their duel began. It almost reminded me of the duels back in the DOMA saga in DM were like. Yusei played a really nice move with getting his Junk Warrior out on the field. I was surprised with how the shadow drone, or whatever his name is, responded with a Dark Synchro Summoning like that and have a negative five level monster. That's pretty new. I wonder how Carly will respond to this duel if she sees it.

Overall, it was a great episode and a nice way to start off the new arc. I still love the new images for the opening theme. It just makes it look even more intense and cool. I'm really looking foreword to how the next episode turns out and how we learn about these Dark Signers.

Well, Luca's/Luna's birthmark is one of the claws, it's just that they messed up with Yusei's by picking the wrong end of the Dragon.

Okay. That makes more sense to me. I could see why they said that Yusei's mark is a head since it kind of looks like one. Sorry about the misunderstanding of your previous post. My mistake.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Does anyone else wish they used the English version of "Last Train" instead of remixing the footage? Not that the remixed OP is bad, though, it flows together better than it did before. But I like the English of Last Train a lot, even though the heavy accent can make it difficult to understand some lyrics Beat Crusaders-style. But the grammar is pretty much perfect.

I might bring it up to 4kiRAB that an English version exists. Maybe they'll run it if they can keep Huntik's full OP.

Eh...it's not quite the same thing, though. The Huntik theme, from what I understand, can afford those extra 33 seconRAB because they don't cause the show to run longer than the 22-minute air time alloted it, (unless it turns out it's edited for the American format, which would suprise me)--the same thing may not be possible with Yu-Gi-Oh! without even more editing. Plus, English or not, "Last Train" still has rights issues that the Huntik theme doesn't--given 4KiRAB' current financial problems, paying for those may be considered a luxury they feel they can't afford. Finally, "Hyperdrive" was the theme requested by voters (including several in this forum) for the show; the argument can quite easily be made that 4KiRAB' is simply giving viewers what they want.

Looking at the new opening again, I noticed that unlike the first season's Yusei and Jack HoYay montage, this one only features Young Mr. Atlas twice, and very briefly. Is this an accurate reflection of his role this season? Yes or no will do.

Yes--to the point where I was wondering if it was her during the show. In any case, I'm glad Taylor's getting a chance to broaden her horizons, acting wise.

Also..."Freezing Fitzgerald"? Hmm...is it an "F. Scott", or is it an "Ella"?

I too loved the refurbished opening; it works a lot better with the music.

I also thought Carly sounded like typical Ortiz at first, so I was surprised when I also figured out it was Taylor; I concur, it's great she's getting a chance to try something different.

Finally, I never really thought Blaustein had anything to do with Goodwin, and I'm pretty sure this confirms it. If someone has the full cast list handy, it shouldn't be too hard to narrow it down.

I've heard the English version for Last Train and while it is a really awesome song, I love the way that they organized the images for this arc with Hyper Drive. Besides that, as Ian mentioned earlier, they would probably have to buy the rights to the song in order to use it and they probably can't afford that at the moment, especially when they're uploading uncut episodes of DM on their YouTube channel and trying to sub them as well.
