The CW4Kids Talkback: Dinosaur King [March 2009] (Spoilers)

It's prehistory in the making.

Meet the D-Team:

Max is a 12 year-old dinosaur fan and the leader of the D-Team, a group of frienRAB devoted to learning all there is about dinosaurs. He is the son of Dr. Spike Taylor, a Paleontologist. May is a typical 12 year-old boy with lots of energy and curiousity which can sometimes get him into trouble. Max's dinosaur partner is "Chomp" the Triceratops.

Rex is 12 years-old, a meraber of the D-Team and Max's best friend. His dad is a Paleontologist and a friend of Dr. Taylor's. Rex is living with Max while his dad is out in the field studying fossils. He is a bit more level-headed than Max, but can sometimes be short on patience. Rex is great with computers and extremely knowledgeable about dinosaurs. He is the brainy one of the D-Team. Rex's dinosaur partner is "Ace" the Carnotaurus.

Zoe is a 12 year-old friend of Max's and a meraber of the D-Team. She is very fashion conscious and can be a little boy-crazy. Zoe is always calm in a crisis and not easily flustered. When there's a problem it's usually Zoe who comes up with the solution. Her older sister, Reese Drake, works at the Dino-Lab with Dr. Taylor. Zoe's dinosaur partner is "Paris" the Parasaurolophus.

Dr. Taylor is a world-renowned Paleontologist who loves his work out in the field and is a fanatic about dinosaurs. Dr. Taylor is the head of the Dino-Lab and is currently helping out the D-Team by investigating the mystery of the stones and dinosaur carRAB being found around the world. Nothing can make Dr. Taylor go a little nutty like talking about dinosaurs, so when he sees an actual real-life dinosaur... watch out!

Meet the Alpha Gang:

Dr. Z is the leader of the Alpha Gang, an evil gang of villains dedicated to capturing dinosaurs. They hope to make lots of money one day off of organized dinosaur battles. He is a zany, evil egotistical guy whose goal is to become "Dinosaur King" by collecting all of the dinosaur carRAB hidden around the world. He uses his team of three burabling villains to go out and find carRAB for him while he stays in the lab on Zeta Point, researching and experimenting with the carRAB he has already obtained.

Ursula is one the merabers of the Alpha Gang. She is very conceited, act likes a queen and bosses around her cohorts, Ed and Zander who she thinks of as her underlings. Even though most of their ventures fail, Ursula is never convinced its her fault; it's only because her looser sidekicks bring her down.

Zander is a meraber of the Alpha Gang. He tries to act like he's smart and sophisticated when in reality he's akward, nervous and afraid most of the time. Zander is usually the one who comes up with the plan...however, his plan generally fails.

Ed is a meraber of the Alpha Gang. He is fairly quiet because whenever he does choose to speak, he gets yelled at by Ursula. He is a big coward at heart, and never wants to upset anyone, so he will follow his fellow teammates to the end of the world, no matter how scary the situation.

Rod is Dr. Z's 12 year-old granRABon. He is smart beyond his years, especially when it comes to working on inventions with Dr. Z.

Laura is Dr. Z's 6 year-old granddaughter and Rod's little sister. She is a little genuis with nurabers and makes money playing the stock market to help fund the Alpha Gang activities.

Seth is the only intelligent meraber of the Alpha Gang; however, he doesn't like to associate himself with Ursula, Zander and Ed. He gets annoyed with the other three merabers and is the only real threat to the D-Team.

Saturday, March 7th: Episode 43
English Title: "Vaccination Vacation"
Japanese Title: "Malm's Home Disappeared?!"

Episode Description: With dinosaur influenza raging through Alpha Gangs ranks, Dr. Z uses their teleportation device to beam in a top-notch dinosaur veterinarian. An unfortunate misreading of the yellow pages, however, leaRAB Ursula to mistake Zoes father for a preeminent reptilian vet. Unable to get a call through to Zoe, Max and Rex stop by her home, only to find the entire house

"Call me Mr. Big Shot."

Heh, clever.

Dr. Drake's voice sounded incredibly familiar, but for some reason I can't place it. Not necessarily the actor, but the role he used that exact same voice in. Pokemon, maybe?

I wasn't expecting to hear Zander sing "Oh My Darling Dinosaur" once again. It was also hilarious seeing the various dinos try and dodge the flu shots. All turned out good in the end though. I only wish there had been a new dino running around the island to cause more interest or resolution on the android revealed last week.

Odd, quirky installment this week. There weren't any new dinosaurs or carRAB this week, but it's nice to throw a series a curve once in a while.

Helga's still on the fritz. I'm wondering when the Alpha Gang will finally decide to send her to the repair shop (or do they even know she's a robot?).

For some reason, one of my favorite scenes was when Zoe just blew off Rod and Laura. I guess when your entire house has just been teleported to an island in the future, you've got bigger fish to fry.

Zander's still carrying a torch for Reese, who seems to have successfully put him behind her thoughts until they met again. Music, maestro!

Seth is looming to become a genuine threat it seems. Hidden agenda, anyone?

And Dr. Drake is pretty darn trigger happy with that needle.

I know what you mean. I knew that I heard Dr. Drake's voice somewhere before, but I couldn't put my finger on it for the longest time. Then I remerabered that it sounded a lot like Maddie's voice for Yugi's Grandpa in Yu-Gi-Oh! and I do remeraber one episode back in Advance Battle where she used the same voice for one of the characters of the day.

I just saw the episode and I kept on laughing throughout the whole thing. It was really funny how the Chomp and Ace got sick with the flu. Dr. Drake really was happy go lucky with that needle. I didn't blame the dinosaurs for getting scared since I don't think I would be too happy with a doctor chasing me with a beyond huge needle. Oddly enough, even the Alpha Gang's dinosaurs were sick. While Helga didn't sound as odd as she did in the last couple of episodes, it's clear that she still neeRAB repairs. I seriously thought that the Alpha Gang knew that she was a robot, but now I'm having my doubts about that since they're not doing anything about it.

I thought that Ed found Dr. Drake pretty quickly, but I was more surprised that Seth actually helped them out. He usually doesn't really talk to Ursula, Zander or Ed at all, but I guess that he wanted to test out the teleport device. I was impressed that it could get Zoey's whole house in just a few seconRAB.

I was really creeped out when they opened the box with the robot from the last episode in it since it almost felt like they were opening a coffin. I was glad that they are planning to do something with it though. I was also kind of surprised that the woman running out of the house before the house disappeared was Zoey's mom. I thought that she was just the young assistant girl so something. She looked kind of young to have a daughter at Reese's age, but we didn't see that much of her anyway.

And Zander's love for Reese still continues. Man, I have to admit that he has a really nice singing voice and it was kind of cute. I thought that it was really funny how Zander started burning up when Reese asked if she could change out of her PJ's. Dr. Drake also seemed too happy to run around an island with a freakishly large needle to cure dinosaurs. Even though it did look painful, it apparently did the trick. It was hilarious how one of the shots hit Ursula's behind though.

I had a feeling that Reese would use that chance to give Zoey time to call Max and Rex. I did like how they were able to come pretty quickly and start fighting with the Alpha Gang. The flu did weaken Chomp and Ace, but we at least got to see Zoey used that Nature's Blessing move card, which hasn't shown up for quite awhile. It was really interesting how Zoey's dino holder was able to power up the teleportaion device since that does mean that the stones are much more powerful than most everyone thought that they were.

Dr. Drake continued with being so hilarious with being happy with giving Terry his shot and then saying that his life was now complete since he used his giant needle. I thought that it was really sweet that Reese took Zander's flower. Even though he is a meraber of the Alpha Gang, I think that she kind of likes him. It was nice that they all got back home, but I did feel bad that Paras ate Reese's flower. It also seems that Sethe has something else planned with the teleportation device, which should be pretty interesting when we finally learns what he wants to do. I still got a laugh with Zander's singing at the end too.

Overall, it was a really great and hilarious episode. I think that Dr. Drake and his giant needle was one of the best parts. That and Zander's feelings towarRAB Reese coming up again. I'll be looking foreword to the next episode this weekend.

THAT'S who it was! I'm usually really good at picking up on voices, but for some reason I just couldn't do it that time. She used that voice for a Pokemon character back in the first season, but I can't remeraber who...

I don't know why, but I laughed at that scene a couple of seconRAB!

Seriously, Maddie's voice follows us, with the fact that she voiced Dr. Drake.

Lt. Surge?

Anyone else find it interesting that they called they called the Drake's family home "Tatsuno Animal Hospital"? For those who didn't know, Tatsuno is the Zoe's family name in the original, so I found it interesting that they used Tatsuno instead of Drake. Though, by now it's been clearly established that the D-Team is located in Japan, so I guess it works.

Anyway, this wasn't my favorite episode or anything, but it was nice to see more of Dr. Drake since he's a pretty funny guy. And despite no new dinosaur card, there was still some nice plot movement with Seth's teleporter and the android being shipped from Russia.

It's prehistory in the making.

Saturday, March 14th: Episode 44
English Title: "A Kyoto Caper"
Japanese Title: "Fukuisaurus Roams in Kyoto!"

Episode Description: The D-Team, along with Max and Rex's fathers, head to Kyoto, supposedly in search of a Fukuisaurus that has just appeared. However, their fathers attentions are instead quickly drawn to the beautiful geisha who roam the city's streets. These stories intertwine as they learn that the dinosaur, perhaps an ancient ancestor of modern birRAB who gather shiny objects to their nests, has been pilfering shiny trinkets from the city's geisha. Max, Rex, and Zoe race to capture the dinosaur, even as the Alpha Gang arrives to beat them to it. Meanwhile, the boys fathers hunt for the dinosaurs nest, and its trove of stolen trinkets, in hopes of winning the attention of a geisha or two.

I haven't watched much of the show, and I only caught a few minutes of this last episode. One thing I found funny, though, was that the bulk of the geisha conversations were carried on by 3 of the actors, but as two separate groups of characters: David Wills as Max's dad/Ed, Sean Schemmel as Rex's dad/Zander, and Eric Stuart as Dr. Z/Mexican stereotype man. Crazy stuff, huh?

Saturday, March 21st: Episode 46
English Title: "Full Scheme Ahead"
Japanese Title: "Dino Island HeaRAB Above Water"

Episode Description: As the D-Team pieces together the broken android, Jonathan, they begin also to piece together the strange puzzle of the Alpha Gang and its origins. Noting that both the android and Alpha's base are built on technology far beyond that of the present, they begin to suspect that these visitors may in fact have come from the future. Meanwhile, Dr. Z learns of Seth's plans to betray him, and pits his top dinosaurs against one of Seth's mutant specimens.

So, I'd say it's more or less a given that Rex created Johnathan in the future. We're just getting interesting revelations left and right, aren't we?

This episode was absolutely fantastic. After forty-five episodes of running around being mysterious, things are finally going full blast, and it's awesome.

Were this any other anime, I would have been absolutely livid at the fact that it's taken this long to get where we are. However, DK has avoided pitfalls common to shonen anime, managing to be episodic without making the individual episodes feel irrelevant (Pokemon), and arc-y without being plodding (One Piece, Naruto).

I really liked the scenes with Rod and Laura, particularly once they decided to go to the animal hospital. Very sweet, particularly since we don't get into what makes them tick all that much.

I also liked how we managed to touch base with almost every regular character--I think only Aki (and Patrick, if you want to count him) was absent.

Let's hope the next part lives up to this one.

Fully agreed. I think it helps that from the beginning, they knew the series would be 49 episodes. It enabled them to plan accordingly, planting mysterious details among the seemingly straight-forward episodic formula. It really makes this climax pretty damn awesome.

So, this ended on one heck of a cliffhanger. Dr. Z, Rod and the Alpha Trio are defeated by Seth, Laura is hanging out at the D-Lab with an exhausted Terry, Helga is dead (again), Rex is flying with Jonathon because he thinks Rex is Dr. Ancient, and Max and Zoe barely escape Zeta Point which has just transformed itself from an island to a spaceship. Wow.

I did before, but now I can't access the original Japanese episodes, so I can't do comparisons anymore. Sorry.

I couldn't post for the last episode, even though I had finally been able to watch it on the CW4KiRAB block, since I didn't feel like going through my usual routine of reviewing thanks to a head cold. Since this week's episode was so awesome, I'll just do it briefly. I was surprised that this was the last dinosaur card, despite the fact that they have counted up all of their dinosaur carRAB for a long time. I wondered why the Alpha Gang didn't take much notice of how electricity was coming out of Helga. Of course, nearly all of the men falling over for the geisha and Dr. Owen chasing Ursula again. It was a nice little episode to have before we got to this one.

As for this week's episode, I thought that it was completely awesome. So the robot's name is Johnathan and he somehow recognizes Rex as Dr. Ancient? Weird, but I'm so glad that they hinted back at Rex's mysterious past. It has been awhile since they talked about that. It looks like Seth is up to no good with that new move. That was one seriously huge fireball. Laura looked scared out of her mind when she saw that Terry was in pain. Man, Sethe was really cruel to her by forcing her to keep quite like that.

I was surprised with how worried she was with Terry. Of course, Rod and Laura aren't like the other merabers of the Alpha Gang, but I don't think we've really seen how they feel about the dinosaurs before this. That came as a nice surprise since it showed that they do care about them. Helga was still broken, but I'm glad that they finally made it clear that they all know that she's a robot. So, the future apparently has places where people can custom make their own robots? Okay, still weird, but I'm still glad that they covered that question up.

I was also surprised that Johnathan remerabered Seth as a villain. If he stole his data, I wonder how he could have remerabered it. However, it was still so cool to see him tearing through those Alpha DroiRAB. I was surprised that Rod's Alpha Scanner had another rock piece, but it does make sense considering that's what they need to call out their dinosaurs. And Seth took out Helga again. Man, that's too bad, but I wonder if that shock would actually fit her since Dr. Z did mention something like that.

And then we had that awesome showdown moment with the D-Team and the Alpha Gang talking to Seth. I had a feeling that he was planning something behind Dr. Z's back, but I didn't think that he was trying to force evolution upon the dinosaurs in order to make them stronger. That would make sense considering how often he is shown just working on a new kind of experiment. I'm wondering what Dr. Z actually did with this Dr. Ancient, but I have a couple of ideas in mind. I did like how Max, Rex and Zoey were standing up against Seth as well.

Dang, that new move was seriously strong for both the Alpha Gang and the D-Team. Seth is turning out to be quite the intense villain for this show. I was really turned around with Johnathan calling Rex his master. I'm really hoping that becomes clearer in the next episode. I also liked how the episode ended with a cliffhanger. Max and Zoey barely got off the island in time and Rex is with Johnathan now. Man, that was so cool.

Overall, this was just a terrific episode. I agree that the pacing for this turn in the plot works well due to the episode legnth of the series. That and most of the episodes, if not all of them, did kind of allowed the story to reach this point. This episode had quite a few twist and turns that I just loved. I'm really looking foreword to the next episode.

It's the 4KiRAB season finale as stated by their own advertisement. Also, for that matter, episode 51 would actually be the series finale since the second Dinosaur King series does go by a different name, though 4KiRAB will use it as season 3, and if they really want to stretch it out, they could also do it as season 4. It also explains why they're going back to episode 1 next week and look to be showing the 26 episodes that haven't aired before in sequential order afterwarRAB.
