The Critic - Reelz Airings Talkback

I didn't even know they were airing this show until someone mentioned it in the Adult Swim forum, and I didn't see a topic about it, so I figured I'd make one. Anyway, I've never watched this show. Is it any good? It's on in an hour, but I'll probably be asleep. I'll try to watch it in the future, though.

edit: It's on at 5:30 EST tomorrow afternoon. I'll watch then.

The show is actually pretty funny. If you liked that episode of The Simpsons that Jay Sherman appeared in when he judged that film festival, you'll most likely like this show. It's pretty similar.

Just be aware that some of the movie parodies are pretty dated. As long as you can forgive that, it's a funny show with some memorable, quirky characters. Its tone is pretty similar to Simpsons season 4, if that gives you an idea.

One of my favorite shows of all time. I still hold out a faint hope that a network, ANY network, will pick it up for new episodes. The world needs a Jay Sherman now more than ever.

What's sad is that a good portion of the movie sequel parodies actually WERE made, some of them actually worse than the writers imagined. (Speed 2, Jurassic Park 2, etc)

Indeed. Heck, they're one movie away from Home Alone 5!

BTW, this show has one of the funniest verbal lines ever committed to television: "Rosebud. Yes, Rosebud Frozen Peas. Full of country goodness and green... pea-ness." Just the way Maurie LaMarche (as Orson Welles) delivers that line, and is quickly disgusted realizing what he just said, is absolute gold. And it's even funnier when you know what they're parodying.

What I loved about this show was that it was absurdly hilarious and could get it's jokes across without drawn out cutaway gags or gross out sight gags. This and Dilbert proved you could 'laugh til you cry' humor without succumbing to toilet humor.

I love Jon Lovitz, and I liked The Critic when it focused on parodies of movies and the Critic's reaction to them. But when it turned to his personal life...meh. He ate a lot, and had creepy, non-funny relatives. And he had a Ted Turner-type of boss who should have been hilarious but somehow wasn't. Overall, The Critic, kind of like Futurama, had some good ingredients that just didn't come together into a satisfying whole.

You're kidding. Duke Phillips is one of the funniest cartoon characters ever. I'd put him up there with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, no joke. And Jay's father was usually humorous as well.

And actually, I thought the show handled the drama better than The Simpsons at times. Like the episode where Jay tells his mother to shut up on national TV and she becomes bedridden. I felt sorry for both of them.

Yeah, Duke was a lot better than your typical 'Rich and evil boss', and you could actually tell he cared about Jay on some level.

"Jay, when I die, you can eat my brain... and it will give you power."

"Hello Jay.""Duke?! How did you get inside?""I have my ways.( pans to a man shaped hole in the wall )"

Yea Duke was sweet, and his dad I just find hilarious. Who doesn't like Baby 1939.

My favorite Frank moment is this:

"First he stole my butler, now he's stealing my daughter."
"Well he's not getting the silverware. I've glued that to the ceiling."
(a dog is shown glued to the ceiling)
"Uh dad, I understand the silverware, but why the dog?"
"You understand the silverware? Haha, cuckoo!"

Just about anything Franklin said was comedy gold.

"I punch like a comet then drink til I vomit, I'm Franklin the sailor man!"

One of my favorite moments was when Siskel & Ebert guest starred:

Siskel: (after being mocked for liking Rain Man 2: Snow Man) Well, you liked Benji the Hunted.

Ebert: You liked Carnosaur.

Siskel: Well, I'll bet you'll like this. (Punches him)

Ebert: Cue ball in the side pocket! (Punches him back)
