When a judge is about to sentence someone who has been convicted, often he give the individual some kind of "scolding" before passing sentence. Is there some specific legal terminology for this kind of "scolding"? I am a teacher and I am not permitted to do more then merely fail my students no matter how disrubtive or outrageous their behavior. Granted, judges are dealing with convicted felons who have done heinous acts, but I have seen judges call these people "scumbags", and this has been entered in to the courts official records of the procedings. The judge has the power to impose a severe sentence but how do they have the power to impose a verbal "tongue lashing"? Does this power, if it exists, have an official name? Can I as a teacher "scold" my students under the auspices of some professional perogative? Madam your child is a failure as a human being and this reflects negatively on you as a parent.
