That was the last ITV drama I watched and I really enjoyed it. Some more uplifting, one-off dramas on ITV or other channels would be very welcome.

Mary Poppins premiered on BBC1 Christmas Day 1984, was shown on New Year's Day 87 and Christmas Eve 1988 both on BBC1. Then for about nine years Mary Poppins was aired either on New Years Day or Easter monday in rotation with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music. All on BBC1. In 2001 Mary poppins received its last BBC1 transmission on Christmas Eve where it was seen the following year on ITV1. ITV3 have shown Mary poppins several times and the most recent transmission on ITV1 was Boxing Day 2008. On Wednesday December 30th 2009 Mary Poppins re-appeared on BBC1 when it aired that afternoon.

You know, if you look back at old Radio Times, you'll notice that Christmas TV back in "the old days" was no better than todays. The schedules were full of the most popular programmes of the era and turned into festive specials.

Where it was Morecambe and Wise, it became Only Fools and Horses. Where it was Only Fools and Horses it became Doctor Who.

Where it was The Generation Game it became Strictly Come Dancing.

Christmas TV hasn't changed. Our viewing tastes have.

If Quantum of Solace is shown this year then it won't be on Christmas Day, I reckon in December after The X Factor quarter or semi final and on a Sunday after the results show.

Filmwise, I think it will be Cars, Shrek the Third, Bee Movie, Enchanted, The Golden Compass and Fred Claus for the Christmas period as the big movies of 2007/8 will have premiered already.

I wouldn't be surprised if BBC1 have a programme about how the part of "Dorothy" was won and how plans are going for The Wizard of Oz's opening at the London Palladium in February.

Yes it is 122 minutes long but on my DVD the movie is 112 minutes and the credits are about 8 minutes. This means that due to BBC1 cropping end credits it could perfectly fit in a 1 hour 50-55 minute slot.

I also never actually suggested originally that a Movie would be shown. I was replying to pizzatheaction who suggested that Doctor Who would be on at 5pm due to a movie being shown. Of course there have been fantasy schedules suggested for fun but I guess we'll have to wait and see what's on and when!:)

Boxing Day probably for Rock and Chips.

Here's my prediction for Boxing Day:

11.00 EastEnders Onminbus
2.00 FILM: Flushed Away
3.20 FILM PREMIERE: Bee Movie
4.40 Songs of Praise
5.15 BBC News
5.35 FILM PREMIERE: Cars
7.25 Total Wipeout Celebrity Special
8.25 Casualty
9.15 Rock and Chips
10.45 BBC News
11.00 Match of the Day
12.30 The Football League Show

One thing that has changed that every single year now the "big film" on Christmas afternoon(on BBC1 anyway) is an animated feature film. Every single year. Yet years ago we had live action films which would appeal more to a wider age range, things like Back To The Future, Indiana Jones, etc. These animated films are of no interest to my family, and everyone I personally know says the same thing too. Every year now I buy a DVD for us to watch on Christmas afternoon, as the films on telly are of no interest to us.

Would be a pleasant change if this year they showed a live action film as the big Christmas afternoon film.....

They were terrestrial premieres apart from Polar Express. I watched or recorded all of them. Must have been the most I'd watched ITV Christmas programming for some time. They also had the premiere of Curious George on Christmas Eve.

Possibly. With the special have all new celebrities, they may decide to get their moneys worth and extend it. Maybe an hour on Christmas Day and another hour on New Years day?

Thanks for that info. Very interesting that Little Abroad scored so highly with regarRAB to ratings. It was, as you say, impressive. Come Fly With Me will certainly be an interesting situation, but I only hope that it doesn't turn out to be this year's Big Top. Great things were hoped for that show, big names etc. But oh dear!

The one off was stopped by Caroline Quentin who didn't want to do it. Clunes has said on quite a few occasions that himself, Morrissey, Leslie Ash and Simon Nye all wanted to do it but Caroline said no. Apparently she fell out with Ash and her husband a few years ago.

Caroline may change her mind mow that she is stuck on M & S aRAB and The Life of Riley:p

Still, inevitably, a very Jay Hunt-ified comedy line-up for BBC One: no surprises, and most of the comedy shows are not sitcom formats.

Ideally, there would be a number of really popular sitcoms fighting it out for slots on Christmas Day, but I have a feeling we'll get only one sitcom special for Christmas Day (The Royle Family), with, if time allows, an episode from the Come Fly With Me series tagged on after it, at 10pm or 10.30pm.
