The Christmas TV Thread 2010

The new version of Upstairs Downstairs is to be screened on BBC One over Xmas/New Year. The provisional dates are 19/12, 26/12 & 2/01/2011.

And we are only a few weeks away from the day the publish the listings and those iddiotic posts "when are they publishing the listings, what time? I can't wait, I can't wait".

From people who, twenty minutes after they are published will have worked out their viewing schedule.

Yeah, It could be on Boxing Day but I'm not sure if Graham Norton will be on Christmas Day? .. I'm pretty sure it will stick to it's Friday airing so therefore be on Christmas Eve.

Recorded it from ITV3 last year on xmas eve ! I had been looking for a repeat for this for years. I'm not sure it has been repeated many times at all & was over-joyed to wtach it again.

Doctor Who
The Nativity
Toast
The Royle Family
Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special
Tonight's The Night Christmas Special
Total Wipeout Celebrity Special
My Family

One of my mates works at the Beeb (something to do with programme publicity).

Anyway, got some info from him about Xmas telly:

Comedies:

Rock & Chips, The Royle Family, Not Going Out, Miranda, Come Fly With Me, My Family and Armstrong & Miller are all doing Xmas Specials.

There is going to be specials of QI, Have I Got News For You, Michael McIntyre, Graham Norton & Would I Lie To You.

Not expecting a great Xmas on the box to be honest, there have been few 'new' shows this year worthy of getting an Xmas speical, and the cutbacks in budgets will mean a lot of repeats.

they also have a habit of picking the most woeful films ever to repeat...I don't even mean the high profile 'flop' films, they choose ones like the Super Mario Bros movie and other such dross.

also hope the writers of the Royle Family have gone back to reality this year, after 2 very over the top episodes. Surely it isn't hard to fill an hour of them just talking about the years events, without resorting to taking them out of the house and defrosting turkey's in bath's etc

What I hope...

A Misfits Christmas special was confirmed a few months back, which sounRAB like one of the most awesome things possible. And Charlie Brooker's Review of the Year will be on, that'll be amazing as always.

I was wondering whether this would be shown over Christmas

I wouldn't be surprised if it does actually air on those dates, it would be perfect Sunday evening entertainment.

I would love Rock and Chips to be on Christmas Day but like you, I don't think it will happen.

But, The Christmas Special may be more Comedy than Drama, unlike the pilot episode ... But .. if it is the same Comedy/Drama as the first episode I'd guess it will be Christmas Eve or Boxing Day.

Trouble is, asides from the Royle Family, there is, at least none confirmed, no other comedy that can follow it. Unless of course Christmas night enRAB up looking like this:

3.10 FILM: Shrek The Third
4.40 BBC News
4.50 Strictly Come Dancing
6.00 Doctor Who
7.00 FILM: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
8.50 BBC News
9.00 EastEnders
10.00 The Royle Family
11.00 FILM: TBA

Could the Miranda special air on BBC One? It's possible but I think given that the main show will be on BBC Two, I think it's unlikely.

Thinking about it, the BBC may put Rock and Chips on Christmas Day after all. If it is advertised strongly it could easily sit nicely at 10pm after an hour long EastEnders at 9pm. As EastEnders is going HD on Christmas Day, it would make sense for it to be hour long. A strong EastEnders episode would be a great lead in for Rock and Chips.

This would mean that The Royle Family could be on Christmas Eve at 9pm and the My Family Christmas Special moved to Christmas Day teatime before Doctor Who. Maybe something like this:

XMAS EVE:

8.00pm EastEnders
8.30 QI
9.00 The Royle Family

XMAS DAY:

6.00 My Family
7.00 Doctor Who
8.00 Strictly Come Dancing
9.00 EastEnders
10.00 Rock and Chips

It certainly would sit nicely in the Christmas day schedules! Mind you, the schedulers usually, more often than not, have a totally different way of thinking!
