The Bunker (1981)

I'd never even heard of this before I watched it on movies4men2+.
A long, international tv production recounting Hitler's last days. All the usual suspects are present: lots of familiar British actors as Nazis, compulsory appearance by Martin Jarvis, token Americans (Richard Jordan doing his best to present Albert Speer as the good guy!) and plenty of "Ah, Herr Himmler, how are you today?" dialogue.
All is forgiven though, when Anthony Hopkins lets rip as Hitler in one of his best and probably least seen performances.
He captures the declining lunatic perfectly and manages to look just like him without becoming a caricature. If all you've seen of Anthony Hopkins is his more recent work and his panto turn as Hannibal Lecter then this will be a revelation.

I knew it was a pretty famous TV movie, think it was last on terrestrial TV in the UK in about 1991. And yet again Piper Laurie was nominated for her acting (Emmys) but failed to win. What kind of PQ does the MFM print have? Their stuff tenRAB to range from surprisingly pristine to unwatchable.

Piper Laurie was very scary (and still gorgeous) as Frau Goebbels. Also a rare glimpse of Julian Fellowes with hair.
The picture quality is awful and looks like one of those dire US daytime soaps. I guess it must have been done on tape originally but it's hard to tell.
At least this appears to be the full version. Although it's in English all the credits are in French for some reason.
