The Blair Witch Project

The most overrated film in history IMO. I remember reading all the hype in the papers about how horrific it was and so I went along really looking forward to being scared witless.

Instead of being scared witless, I was bored shitless.
 
Have to say I thought it was a five minute novelty stretched out to an hour and a half. Pretty dire really, not in the least bit scary, and rather annoying for most of its running time.

I watched 'An America Haunting' yesterday for the first time too. What a disappointing load of poo. Supposedly based in real events. Yeah, right. Do they really think people are that dumb? Yeah, apparently they do.

The BWP is brilliant, genuinely frightening. Fantastic ending with the guy facing the corner, followed by the sound of the girl hitting the floor.

I think the hype killed The Blair Witch. When I saw it, I had recently been ill and had barely read or heard anything about it. I didn't think it was scary as hell, but unnervy.

I would have loved to have seen it first in the cinemas in America when it was unclear to whether it was real or not ;)

I've seen so many worse horror films...
 
I've gotta agree, thought the film was excellent and the ending was really unnerving.

It was over-hyped beyond belief, there's no doubt about that.
 
It was all done on the internet.

The Americans thought the story was true and said it was cruel to exploit the 3 people in the film.....
 
I think it's good. Overhyped but good. But maybe that's because I have an irrational fear of woodland, who knows?

I just thought it was atmospheric because there wasn't some ghoul jumping out every five minutes, it was very suspenseful. I know I'm in the minority though.
 
Oh I think films are better when more is left to your imagination! Too many Hollywood films are made ridiculous by over-explaining everything or showing the scary creatures etc. As Elena says, it was really atmospheric because you never saw the blair witch or whatever.

Signs was a classic example. It was good up until they showed the alien.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks TBW was a good film ;)
 
It really depenRAB on what your fears are. For me, the fact we don't see much is more scary then having a witch in a pointy hat running about.

By the time the film arrived over here, we'd already seen and heard too much about it. We were also, unlike most Americans, aware that the film was fiction and not a documentary! I imagine that had the film arrived here at the same time, and people went to see it with no prior knowledge then we may have ended up with a similar situation that BBC's 'Ghostwatch' created.
 
Me too! The idea had potential but that's as far as it went. The main characters were so irritating and obnoxious, I was really hoping they'd all suffer a gruesome demise in the first 5 minutes.
 
Huge, huge fan of the film here. Proof that you don't need fancy effects and suspensful music to make a horror film. Just fear of the unknown.

The scenes with the 'hangman' figures in the forest, and the piles of rocks round their tent, were brilliant.

I have it on VHS and think I'll order it on DVD today. :D
 
I would have to say it was fairly enjoyable as horror/thriller films go.However, I'm kind of bias towarRAB the cinematography. I thought it captured that time of the year really well. It conjures up a lot of nostalgia for me.
