The Black Cauldron vs. Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night.

As a major classic Disney fan, my obvious answer is Black Cauldron. It was one of Disney's darker films but it was incredibly well-done. The Horned King was an excellent villain. And a fun fact, his design was the original design for Maleficent. ;)

Ok, what about this terrifying and disturbing scene which scared me crapless when i was 6 in 1987 seeing it in a theater, my mom took me to see this movie cause i loved Disney's Pinocchio and this movie scared me more then Disney's version due to this infamous scene:

Tell me if you thought that was disturbing or not.

Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night is just flat-out one of my all time favorite movies.

The good side is there's not a lot of memorabilia to collect for it, and what little there is goes for very cheap.

the bad side is...no USA region DVD, and no line of action figures....

I even tried hunting down the songs from it that would've been on a soundtrack...which also never saw release.

Is Emperor of the Night any good? At first, I thought it was just a bad cash in on Disney's film...then I realized I didn't actually like the Disney movie itself except for the visuals.

Wow, I've never heard of this Pinocchio movie before, and I thought I'd heard of every 80's movie by now.

I watched bits and pieces of it. Looks like every other trippy, confusing, creepy animated film of the era. It can't be any better than "Pinocchio in Outer Space." (Which Lou Scheimer also had a part in, so he seemed to like Pinocchio.)

For those who doubt Filmation just wanted to ride on Disney's back, their next (and last) film was the Snow White "sequel" Happily Ever After.

I actually love The Black Cauldron, it is dark indeed, but I don't mind that. I first saw it when I was a lot younger than I am now, probably about 8 or so, and I liked it a lot.

By contrast, I recently found Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night on youtube....good God, this thing scares the living bejesus out of me. It's hands down the creepier of these two - scares me half to death at my current age; if I'd seen this as a kid...

Actually it's kind of a standalone movie with no connection, much like Batman Begins and Dark Knight are to the Batman movies. It's quite a fun and very dark movie, it's the kind of Filmation movie that actually has quality animation and a nice storyline despite some holes in the plot, it's also more true to Collodi's vision of Pinocchio. I mean Pinocchio has been a public domain character for many years with many films.

Even Rankin-Bass made a stop-motion sequel to Pinocchio called Pinocchio's Christmas and the same cricket in the movie looks like Jimminy.
