The No. 3 has been placed into a reverent semi-retirement in the seven years since Earnhardt's death in 2001. A racecar, mostly black, with a white No. 3 on the side will be returning to NASCAR on April 19, 2008 driven by Austin Dillon, Childress' bright-eyed, 17-year-old grandson.
What are your thoughts on this news?

Yea I read the article and though I wasn't a Dale Sr. fan I think out of respect for the 7 time champion they should retire that number for good.
I know Richards grandson ( Dillon ) is only 17 and looking forward to a long carrier in the nascar sport but come on...
The Car is even " BLACK " and at first glance, it looks like the Earnhardt car. I say leave it in the hall of fame.
RIP SR>

Don't like it. Is he trying to compare himself to Earnhardt? Sounds pretty arrogant especially since he could have used any other colour. I don't follow racing much but think it should be retired totally, not only because he was a great driver but because his death brought about the mandatory head restraints that have saved so many that have followed him.

lf I were a driver I definitely woulf not feel comfortable driving a #3 car, especially if it resembled Dale Sr's.

At first I thought that number should be retired, but Davey Allison and Alan Kwicki's numbers weren't retired. But if you retired the numbers of those that have died, there'd be the 7 of Alan Kiwicki, the 28 of Davey Allison, the 45 of Adam Petty, and there have been others.

Its still gonna be a few yrs before he is in a Sprint Cup event he is only 17.. Its gonna come back in Cup someday, if it has to just let it be a Chevy. Nascar doesn't retire #'s..I just hope when it comes back its not black.. RIP Dale Sr you're the real #3.

They are never going to retire the #3 so if it is used by Childress`s grandson who can stop it. I think it`s time to bring it back, It`s been sitting idle for 7 years now = to Dale Sr. `s championships, I think it would be a good thing to see the black #3 back on the track . They retire #`s in different sports all the time, but each team has from 00 to 99 to work with ,NASCAR has around 16 teams all working off the same group of #`s. Just my opinion.

Awesome news....What better way to celebrate the number of a legend, than to give it to a brand new driver to start off his career.

I will probably get a lot of thumbs down for this, but remember, Dale Sr didn't always have the #3 at the Cup level.

I miss Dale Sr as much as the next guy, but it's time to move on. If death were the criteria for retiring a number, then #28 would get my vote (Both Davey Allison and Kenny Irwin were driving that number)

And if there's any number which deserves to be retired first, it's not the #3, but the #43.....ya'll know who made that number famous.
