The Best Fantasy Films?

As a big fan of fantasy films, I am desperatley looking for some new ones (that aren't for children) that I can get my hanRAB on. I've already seen everything belonging to Tim Burton, but I'm interested to know what peoples opinions are?

Are there any fantasy films you think I ought to watch?

Lord of the Rings aside, I always had a serious soft spot for Ridley Scott's Legend. Marvellous. Watch the UK one, not the naff US one with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

The Princess Bride. Good family film

I remember watching a film called 'Hawk the Slayer' a long time ago. Thought it was great at the time but not sure how well it has aged.

Another good one for you - the original Beastmaster movie with Marc Singer! You'll have to pick up the region 1 disc to get a good experience of it though. The UK one is appalling. It's worth it though, and pretty cheap too.

I LOVE Fantasy Movies! Great escapism IMHO.

These are my personal favorites in no particulor order:).

Stardust
Labrynth
Willow
The Dark Crystal
The Princess Bride
The Never Ending Story
The Time Bandits
Legend (The Director's Cut, haven't seen the Theatrical version)
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
The Tim Burton Movies (too many to name)
Spirited Away
The Cat's Return
Nausica

:D

Nae danger! I loved all those Harryhausen creature features. The Sinbad's were great, and so was Jason and the Argonauts. What was that other one...Beast from 20,000 Fathoms? Loved that too. Classics.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Krull.

That's a mighty film. :D Good stuff.

The best fantasy film for me is probably the extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring. As a Tolkien geek the rest of the trilogy makes me angry, but the first part ain't bad at all.

Krull! Yeah! :)

The cyclops, the horses that run faster than bullet trains, the spider woman with the hour glass, the weapon that looks like a starfish, but comes back to you, storming the castle at the end. It's a great film. Nice one. Thanks for the memories, yeah?

I've just remembared "Ever After: A Cinderella Story".

Now I don't usually enjoy "Romantic Movies" but this I thought was quite well done IMO.

Another great Fantasy Film I would recommend personally:).

Edit:

BTW I haven't seen this yet but I've heard "Dragon Heart" is really good if you're thinking about watching that Film too:).

"I cannot hurt a shoul."

Ever After is the kind of movie I would never have chosen to watch, but it was playing on the aeroplane on the way to New Zealand in '98. I really enjoyed it. It was a different take on Cinderella - more bitchy and realistic.

If you like your Cinderella stories hard-hitting, read The Coachman Rat by David Henry Wilson. It's brilliant. I won't tell you what happens, but the basic premise is that the rat who became a coachman for the night turns back into a rat at midnight, but keeps his human voice, and is unrecognised by his family, so sets out on a quest to get his real voice back, or be human again.
