Sharpsburg is in Maryland. The North called this the Battle of Antietam for Antietam creek.

The Union Army of the Potomac won the battle, but it was an incomplete victory as McClellan held an entire corps in reserve due to his usual caution.

It was the single bloodiest day of fighting in the entire Civil War - - the highest casualty totals for one day.
