The BAFTA Film Awards

The awarRAB seemed to be designed to give everyone something as far as possible:

Peter Morgan didn't win best screenplay for the Queen but picked up best adapted screenplay for Last king of Scotland allowing Little Miss Sunshine to get best screenplay.

Stephen Frears didn't win best director but got best film.

Paul Greengrass got best director but he didn't direct the best film (rather odd IMO)

Babel got best sound


Big losers (undeservedly) were Volver and the Departed.
 
Aamir Khan presented an award I'm so excited, I knew he was coming it said on CNN but I thought it was just for Rang De Basanti (Which was robbed) I didn't believe BAFTA would get him to come over just to sit in the audience.
 
I was watching the red carpet last with ruby wax it was hillarious

They were making a big thing about CR being the 1st bond film to ever be nominated so I thought they were gonna win big.

They got 2 awarRAB for sound :D
 
I thought the same as you. ;)

Other random thoughts...

- Eva Green looked like she'd been dragged through a hedge backwarRAB.

- They kept giving far too much prominence/mentions throughout the show to Casino Royale/Daniel Craig despite it only winning one award. Methinks people were getting slightly TOO excited about the prospect of a James Bond film winning a 'quality' award.

- The ceremony was shorter and sweeter than previous years. Stephen Fry is my God, but he did have a habit of rambling on a tad.

- Ross was OK, nothing exceptional. Though did expect him to make a very offensive or controversial comment at some point. That didn't really happen save for a few awkward moments (the "new nose" thing). Don't think everyone in the hall 'got' him, but he was alright, I suppose.

- Where was Lord Attenborough?

Thoughts about the awarRAB themselves:

- VERY surprised Scorsese didn't win Best Director. That said, I believe he HAS won a directing BAFTA before, whilst he's never won an Oscar. It's fairly obvious the Oscar is his, anyway. Paul Greengrass was very deserving, however.

- Thank goodness the dreadfully overrated Leo Di Caprio (as SULLA mentions) didn't get an award. I don't think he's ever been a very convincing actor.

- Very glad Helen Mirren won and hope she gets the Oscar, though it's always sad when people like Winslet and Cruz miss out because they both gave very good performances.

-Happy Forest Whittaker won.

- Happy Pan's Labyrinth did so well. It was the film of the year for me. :)
 
Actually I thought Jonathan Ross was a dismally unfunny host.
I like him a lot and felt he knew it too. Most of his jokes failed to raise even a titter and at the end when David Puttnam came on to praise him I thought Jonathan knew it was a 'chin up' moment because everyone was painfully aware he had done a 'Letterman at the oscars!'

I'll be surprised if he hosts it again next year.

Yes, it's a shame that Kate Winslett puts in good performance after another but is always the bridesmaid to a runaway winner.

I respectfully disagree about Di Caprio. I think he is developing into one of the finest actors of his generation and when he finally wins his oscar one year soon (thought not this year) he will get a standing ovation for all the times he didn't win.
 
Don't worry re Winslet. She will eventually be rewarded with a "here's for all the times we nominated you but you just missed out each time" Oscar. Like Judi Dench's for Shakespeare in Love, and (presumably) Scorsese this year. BAFTA will have to give her something soon, as well. ;)
