The Guardian says he was convicted (for offensive weapons) on the 2nd September 2009, and filming started on the 10th September.

Well, I don't think the BBC can be blamed, but clearly he should have told them.

The police found the weapons after he was accused of assaulting his former wife. Obviously we don't know what happened, but had I been a candidate on the show, I'd be quite concerned about being isolated with him.
