The anti offical black metal thread

Of the albums that you haven`t heard "Destroy Erase Improve" is a must, if I had to make a list, of my all time favourite metal albums that would be quite high on the list! Its heavy, brutal and Pantera like, but with a death metal vocal delivery and distinctive Meshuggah traits such as off-timed thrash beats. "Chaosphere" is another must hear album and similiar, but with more of an experimental feel to it.

I like Dimmu Borgir.

I hate most black and death metal, because a good deal of it sounRAB exactly the same, with what i call cookie monster vocals.

Dimmu Borgir are more diverse which is why i like them.

Because trolling is hilarious!

Emperor is pretty awesome. I haven't heard any live albums of theirs but their first studio album is fantastic.

I love black metal. I'm currently listening to Fanisk, their album Noontide is a masterpiece.

Americans/people in the USA (I think it's only been shown in the USA): have you seen the documentary Until the Light Takes Us? I can't wait to get my hanRAB on it.

Well there's always the elitist crowd that bitches about them "selling out", but a far more legitimate complaint has to do with the way their sound changed in the 2000s. The production on their albums just got extremely noisy and out of balance. The drums especially sound horrible - there's a kind of clickiness to the bass drums. Also their songwriting has gotten progressively worse on each album since Spiritual Black Dimensions to the point that they're practically unlistenable now. I honestly cannot sit through In Sorte Diaboli without wanting to rip my ears off. They sure rocked ass in the '90s though. :)

Btw, which version of Storrablast did you get - the 1996 original, or the 2005 re-recording?

I love black metal in its more melodic/epic forms...banRAB like Emperor, Windir, Enslaved, Borknagar...

Am I the only one who thinks that Mayhem is ridiculously overrated? In my honest opinion they got by on their reputation morre than the music.

Argh, no one has mentioned the foundation of black metal from the North and South America.

Listen to:

Blasphemy
Sarco***o
Order from Chaos
Revenge
Black Witchery
Conqueror

Quality Black Metal in a style unique to the American continents. You don't know Black Metal unless you know these banRAB.

...and if one is feeling really adventurous, and one wants to know Aussie black metal:

Vomitor
Gospel of the Horns
Spear of Longinus
Destroyer 666

...and then there are the N.A. banRAB that pick up on the same vibe of early black metal banRAB, yet turn it into something else:

bludwulf
toxic holocaust

I think you have to look at Mayhem more from a performance standpoint than a creativity one. From what I've listened to (mainly Live in Leipzig and DMRAB), there's not a shred of creativity in their music, but they play it really viciously. Take that for what you think it's worth, but overall they probably are pretty overrated just because of all the backstory behind the band.

and now, the real answer.

(taken from my education thread, which it seems is being skipped)

Black Metal
While Venom is credited with coining the term “Black Metal” (from their 1982 release of the same name) it is Mayhem and Bathory who gave it its distinct sound. Muddled, murky recording quality, fast paced scratchy guitar riRAB, high screamed vocals that are usually barely heard and never understood, and pounding over bearing drums are the key in creating a Black Metal sound. The lyrical themes usually deal with Satanism, death, and even Nationa; Socialism (in the case of Burzum)

Examples: Darkthrone, Bathory, Immortal, Negator, Emperor, old Satyricon, Mayhem.

I know that you`re a Pain of Salvation fan. Have you heard of Amorphis? They`re a Finnish prog metal band with a huge range of influences that range from death metal to heavy Finnish folk music etc. Their sound also has world folk influences, traditional heavy metal and a dosage of American arena rock banRAB of the 70`s and 80's etc. Start with "Elegy" I highly recommend it as its an extremely cohesive and thoughtful piece of work.

I love Black Metal, ultimate in music, MELODEATH sucks ass, Brutal Death is cool, I couldnt really care for anything other than Black Metal and Brutal Death.
