The 49 Worst Artists in Music History

This kind of list neeRAB to generate controversy in order for anyone to get interested, so it's predictable that it will have lots of acclaimed artists on it. I think the list itself is rather ridiculous, but it's still fun to read some of the reasoning behind it, though.

Like this bit of trivia about Rick Wakeman :

What's wrong with Celine Dion? Not that I'm a fan, but I thought if you like soppy love songs and power ballaRAB by female singers, she'd be pretty good.

Is it her or do people just hate that kind of music in general and she's an easy target?

Definetly agree with this bit. Also, I'm sometimes slightly irritated by people who define their taste in music by what they don't like rather than what they do like. As you say, being negative is real easy.

I think a big difference between me and Boo is when I read stuff like this, I may feel a little pang of irritation and think something along the lines of "this moronic dribble can be safely ignored". On the net, I tend to ignore things I don't like. Boo doesn't and deals with irritation partly by writing rants. Aside from that difference, I basically agree with everything he's written so far. ;)

Good point :) I think it's interesting that when I read the information above, I can't see where the text highlights anything bad about ELP except a generally negative angle demonstrated by the use of the word "nightmarish". If you'd never heard of ELP or any of their music before, the text above wouldn't actually tell you why they deserve a spot on that list. Does classic influences, long solos or persian rugs make a nuraber 2 on a list of the worst artists EVER?

Some poor criteria I'd say.

I like the list, thats a lot of artists i hate....but in terms of actual talent I disagree with a couple. I hate Celine Dion, but she can still sing...and while i may not b a huge Stones fan, Jagger is an icon of rock. Being a rock star is almost more about your attitude then your actual talent, though his signing isnt that bad.

Or if he wasn't such a arrogant douche I would at the very least take him off my hit list. I mean seriously, as if it's not enough you nerfed it out with your signature middle-aged white guy style, but adding your own crappy licks to a Louis Armstrong cover proves to me your a prick.

These bits from the article are especually awful.

Suck my balls.

First off, completely writing off Nietzsche and Native American folklore is pretty damn ignorant. Second, how in the **** did The Doors lead to the invention of goth? They had influence on it obviously but I wouldn't say they are primarly responsable. But why is that even a bad thing even if they were? No goth, no Cure.

And they cite two of the best Doors songs as their worst, nice.

Errr. Just read the first bit. First off Live are nothing like U2 and second they mispelled pretentious and third Nirvana influenced Creed too so should you guys stop sucking Cobain's rotting **** now?

And fourth what's f*cking wrong with the hindu quote? Are you guys bigoted assh*les or do you seriously think having interest in other cultures makes you automatically pretentious?

So, my favorite genre of music is being constantly shat on by people who think the most interesting musicians to do interviews with are people like Fall Out Boy and Fergie. I don't know weither to be humored or disgusted.

Oh here we go again with the prog, did a prog fan rape you as a child or something?

Oh, and dissing Roger Dean. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

The more I read this the more I get this mental image.

And you gotta f*cking love how their primary criticism of the music is that it lacks... sex. And how does the music lack emotion exactly? These writers don't really bother to explain their opinions, at all.

Yeah, how DARE a band break from convention and do something different.

Blender Magazine: If it's not durabed down three chord rock and pop with lyrics about f*cking and is too complex for our 5 year old mentality to handle, it's baaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Again, THIS is the magazine in question.

So I guess there's really no need to go on.

Funny as ****. Even when contemplating bad music they still fail. Proof that lists fail unless they are made by the folks at rab.

PS Whitesnake are bloody great.

I have to agree with Boo here. I can't really see how those youtube viRAB prove ELP is a crap band. Carl Palmer playing drums for Asia in 2008 and a vid from Lake's holiday single? None of those are even ELP.

In a word, sigh.

Furthermore, a lot of great banRAB from the early 70s turned to **** towarRAB the end of the decade and into the 80s. Doesn't just go for that time period either, all banRAB have an expiry date. Similar to what Boo mentioned, if you're gonna write off every artist/band who made a bad song or did something unlikeable in a long career, you're gonna have to write off a lot of great music.

Technically so is the guitar.

Piano was featured prominately in a lot of early rock n roll. A lot of Rolling Stones songs have piano too.

Hell, even Black Sabbath have piano songs. Not all rock music is "rock n roll" though, some forms of rock do have classical influences, there's nothing wrong with that, rock music is a lot broader than just rock n roll, hard rock and songs about bum sex.

Billy Joel might be a piano guy, but what he plays is still very rock n roll influenced, so I wouldn't say Collective Soul rock harder just because they use guitars.

I think it's probably the fact that she is an easy target... she's got vocal chops but her style of music turns me waaaaaaaaaaay off...

I bet it was really hard narrowing this list down, although I can think of about 10 artists on the spot who suck much worse than... The Doors.

So what if it's un-rock n roll? They are not a rock n roll band, they're a soft rock band so they have an appropriately soft name.

Honestly I think they're a decent band, and one of the better soft rock groups. There's much much worse stuff as far as this genre is concerned, haunting me every time I have to visit my local pharmacy or grocery store.

I have to retract from what I said earlier about Air Supply, they're indeed worthy of the list, their music is awfully sickening. Other key offenders are Michael Bolton and Richard Marx, who also earn their place on this list, and a very special place in hell.

One soft rock artist I unappologetically love though is Todd Rundgren, anyone who doesn't appreciate this guy's genius is in for a world of hurt courtesy of boo boo.

With ELP, the Doors, Rick Wakeman, the Alan Parsons Project, and Yanni up there, it seems almost as if Blender has an axe to grind with keyboardists/pianists. :D

Rather than critically analysing the whole list or picking out the banRAB/artists I think shouldn't be up there, I'll say that most of the list is decent. But I will say this:

I like Primus but I can understand why their polarising nature might land them a place in a list like this (even if I disagree). And that's why I can't understand why banRAB like Jamiroquai would be up there. Personally, I think they're overrated as their albums strike me as being rather homogeneous and inconsistent (that and I prefer Incognito). But one of the worst artists in music history... really? They're good at what they do and their basslines alone disqualify them from this list.
