You are applying a very narrow view of socialism as well, you are applying it only to a large government, nrabroad
to the small groups of people loosely associated as Marx originally described it.
The US was libertarian, and it was quite tyrannical after the industrial revolution, since all the power was in the hands of a very few rich robber barons. It took the government to break that up, along with labor unions.
