That was a pleasant surprise

Has anybody sat down to watch a film not expecting too much from it but ended up really enjoying said movie.

I watched 'Doomsday' last night on DVD (bought with other DVD's as part of an offer) and i really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting much, so the fact that the film exceeded my expectations made me feel good.

I'm not saying the films a classic. I was just pleasantly surprised by it. (plus Rhona Mitra is gorgeous).

Has anybody else watched a film that has exceeded their expectations.

Shawshank redemption for me.

I was working in a video rentalshop at the time, and we often got timecodes to borrow. The rep was in, and we were doing the order for the next month. We got to Shawshank and I flicked the age over saying I wasn't interested. He flicked it back.
"Yeah, you want this."
"It's a Prison film?"
"Yep."
"Nah. No one's interested in them anymore."
"They will with this one."

We struck a deal. He lent me a timecode of it, and said he was passing this way next week.
"I'll pop in when I'm passing. If you watch that in the meantime and can look me in the eye and say you don't want it, I'll cross it off the list."

I took ti home that night, really expecting to hate it.
Oh how wrong I was :)

Needless to say I got several copies and plugged it to all the customers.
I even did the "If you rent this, then bring it back to me and can look me in the eye and say you didn't enjoy it, you can have your rental fee back!"

I think I gave 3 refunRAB in all the years I was there :)

Shawshank didn't do very well on its initial release if i remember rightly but it is now regarded as a classic by many so i suppose this film would be the ultimate 'pleasant surprise'.

DOOMSDAY? Lmao, that's one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and by God I've seen some shite. The "can can" scene during the cannibal party... dear God how anyone can enjoy that movie is beyond me :p

Doomsday is fabulous!! Second favourite from the man after The Descent.

Anyway, I thought I would hate Mamma Mia! so much, everyone else in the world had seen it and when I got around to seeing it, I enjoyed it a lot. Now I have my lovely edition of it on dvd in the collection, yay.

I was expecting Moulin Rouge to be a dreary, cringeworthy film with nothing to distinguish it from the average romance, but when I was finally persuaded to watch it I thought it was very funny and emotional. :)

Memento was a big suprise to me , i just thought some bloke lost his memory how good can that be?
I put off watching it for months then one night not much on telly so i thought i would have a look.
Really enjoyed it and it was a excellent film.

Memento is fantastic, I tried to get someone to watch this and they watched the first few minutes and for some strange reason they said it reminded them of a film called Red Sonya(sp?)...

I went into the cinema not expecting much, not taking it seriously and just seeing it as a fun montage of his favourite films of that nature and it delivered that and worked well for me.

Some people keep mentioning a rip off of Mad Max movies, but I've yet to watch them all the way through so don't have them to compare to Doomsday. I believe Marshall mentioned them as a big influence too.

Still fabulous fun :p

That's what i was trying to put across. I'd heard bad things about the film, Escape from NY rip off, etc. so i assumed i wouldn't enjoy it, but i liked Dog Soldiers and loved The Descent so i put it on in the background and ended up really enjoying it.

I've watched over-hyped films, expecting too much and left disappointed so watching a film that you didn't expect much from and enjoying it is like a bonus.

I'm sure there's other so called rubbish films out there that you enjoy despite yourself.

I expected Holiday on the Buses to be good , not thinking it would turn out to be a comedy masterpiece.
Anna Karen has never been sexier as Olive, and it is to her credit that her sensual allure does not detract from the perfect delivery of her amusing lines.
Robbins, Varney, Lewis and Grant are at the peak of their powers here, and as a bonus we get two hilarious turns from Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts.
"Comedy gold " is a much misused term these days, but is the only way to describe a film that is up there with Some Like It Hot, Blazing Saddles, Naked Gun etc etc
