That smell? What caused this?

I've got a couple of issues I could use some help on...

First thing...Lately I have noticed after short stops for fuel or rest when I start my bike I have a strong smell of gear oil. It only does it after short stops, if my bike has been setting for an hour or more it doesn't do it. Any ideas?

Second question every now and then after parking my bike after long rides it will spray what looks like oil/fuel mixture onto my tank (see pic). It is heavy on the under side of the tank. There is nothing on the engine. It was not on there while riding. I didn't notice until this morning. Any ideas on this one?

I have not experienced that on the 10' Ultra, but on other bikes the crankcase breather is vented to the back of the air intake/air filter assembly, some times the oil mist will be sucked up the hose and deposited through the air filter. The concentration of the oil mist can blow through the filter onto the bike.

It might be neck bearing grease. Can you check up under the fairing between the forks? If you find a gob of it just clean it off with a rag. It get's warm and will drip. Any on the forks?

Don't know about the fuel smell.

I get a smell as you describe but I think it's fuel. My guess is after a ride there are alot of fumes coming out the vent from the activity of the fuel churning from the pump and sloshing around while riding. My routine is to park the bike outside the garage for about an hour, let it cool down and the smell goes away. If I go right in the garage after a ride the whole house will stink.

I have no clue on the stuff hitting your tank.

No, the smell I have is definitely gear oil when I start my bike after short stops such as for fuel or getting a drink.

I thought about the neck grease but there is nothing there. It is mostly on the underside of my tank and more toward the seat.

In the picture it looks like the right side of the bike , is there anything getting on the left side?

I would investigate the air filter, take it off and see if any oil is in/on it.
When I had the issue , enough oil would drip/accumulate to get on the exhaust behind the shields and it would give off an odor like hot grease.
