That's all fine and good but I've yet to find a single job opening, part-time, where I was considered because I'm "over qualified" to work a retail job.
to both.
I was lucky and graduated without debt but I also made sure to not sit around playing COD between classes and studied my ass off (took a bunch of classes for business minors etc. i didn't actually need for my degree so i knew something about how to run a business)
I just graduated with a BA for Communications/Video Production, however I also have professional contacts within the media world and am working on landing a job there, my biggest challenge right now is that there are so many interns at the companies the job posting nurabers are small. (I chose my major based off of how many people I knew in the fielRAB I was interested in working in, making is somewhat easier for me to get a job when I graduated).
Hell I just did a Production Assistant gig for free at the USS Intrepid for the company I interned at last year because I'm trying to work my networking into landing me a job. 6 hours of my weekend spent doing shit for free. (though I did get to meet Will Shatner )
On the flip side however, I have frienRAB who got BA's (even some with the coveted BS ) who didn't do much during their internships, sat around did nothing during school and now are bitching about not finding a job, these are Behavioral Science, Accounting, and Art majors I'm talking about .
Imo it doesn't matter what your degree is in, its more dependent on several factors that could affect your degree choice namely:
1) What connections you have to your field of choice (jobwise)
2) How hard you're going to work your ass off for that degree + your internship
3) How much incentive you have to actually retain the knowledge you get from your classes.
Granted those aren't the be all end all factors but off the top of my head those are what helped me out
