Texting/Aim/Internet/Phone: The search for perfect phone

So my contract with AT&T is finally up which means I am free to do whatever I want right now service wise. I am on a family plan. My sister is going to be breaking off and having her company pay for her service/plan. My parents will stay on the family plan, but they are going to have to sign up for Cingular now if they decide to switch over to Cingular. I don't know what I want to do, it will all depend on which service has the best phone/plan for me.

What I am looking for in a phone is something that will always have me connected. I do not use the phone that much compared to my texting. I want something with internet/texting/aim/e-mail/etc. I know there are plenty of phones out there that can do those, but when I take a look at it, Tmobile seems to be the only service out there with an unlimited data plan, which will fall under the Sidekick plan. I've taken a look at the sidekick III and it seems pretty nice. For $299 though and a brand new phone, I'd expect it to have better functions than my S710a.

I'm pretty sure I'm set on getting an Sidekick 3 but this is going to be a thread where people can basically suggest and convince me that there are better phones out there for what I need. Again, I would like to find a service that offers that unlimited data plan that Tmobile offers.

Well I suggest reading up on the new blackberry pearl that is coming to t-mobile soon. It's smaller then the sidekick 3 and has more functions.

mda/8125... does everything plus more... does AIM very well... text are ame, phone is probably better, and internet no contest its better

Only thing with the sidekick is the sidekick plan $20 (with voice) for everything unlimited, I don't think they offer that with MDA/Blackberry?

I think given what you are looking for, the SK3 will suit you fine. Typically I wouldn't recomend that phone, I would suggest a WM5 or Symbian phone, but as far as texting and AIM goes, the SK3 will be hard to beat, esp. when data is only $20 a month. The biggest problem (which plagues me to this day) with WM5 (both editions) and Symbian is the lack of a solid, stable AIM application. That said, save yourself some trouble and just pick up an SK3

im in the same boat as u and im going to a 8125 or to a sprint device after my sk2 .... i dont like the new sk3 and after dealing with tmo fior like the 2 weeks on trying to get a deal on resigning with a mda...im going to do a switch

but like stated ...if u wana use web or change programs on the phone the sidekick are not for you ..web suks on it adn well ur stuck with whatever apps tmo will let u download.

JWile, I would suggest holding out for the 8525 which is set to be released within the next few months. Basically, it's an upgraded 8125 with a better camera, 3G, much better processor and is slightly thinner.

Also, OP, if you can find a good AIM app for the 8525 (or the T-Mobile MDA, really, which is their version of the 8125) it should beat a sidekick hands down. Finding an app you really like that is stable may be slightly difficult though.

Multi tasking....being on aim and yim and msn plus web browsing /sending emails and texting all at the same time, the sk3 will fit your needs. Being that you came from a sony,a windows phone will give a headache ie. The mda and 8125... my second opinion is to go for a Black Berry 8100(pearl) it has a o.s. As stable as the sk3. If your really in I'M's the SK3 can't be beat it has the best built in aim/yim/msn seen on a mobile device and a qwerty that can't be beat..

Blackberries are simply the best mobile e-mail solution available. Thats why they are so popular and thats why people purchase them for the most part. However, in terms of IM, mobile web, multimedia, and 3rd party software, they lack behind other smartphones quite a bit.

The new Pearl is a step in the right direction for RIM, but they still have a long way to go before they are on equal ground with WM and Symbian, IMO. That said, for the time being I would go with an SK3 if you value IM over other features, or I would get the Cingular 8125 (or it's forthcoming replacement, the 8525), if you want a solid, well rounded phone.

well on a WM5 device can i have multiple imap emails? and could this be done on a blackberry? im really needing something for a phone, texting, not so much im but it would be nice once in a while, maybe some simple web to get myself out of a jam, and email..lots of it.

Well if you're leaning that heavily towards e-mail and texting I suppose you could just go with a blackberry. Yes WM5 will support multiple IMAP accounts, but I'm pretty sure blackberry will still do it better. I've never really used a blackberry as my needs lean towards the mutlimedia/mobile web end of the spectrum, and only casual e-mail, so I can't help you too much here.

If you get a device that is WM5 Smartphone edition (cingular 2125, 3125 or the HTC excalibur if cingular picks it up), then the data plan is only $20/mo. If you get a WM5 Pocket PC (8125, 8525) then you have to pay the $40/mo fee.
