Text Message Sender Identification

A couple of people to whom I have sent text messages have told me that my name did not pop up on their phones and it took a couple of back-and-forth messages to establish who I was. My question is whether this is a problem with their phone or with my phone...is there some setting I need to make on my phone to be sure that my name pops up on the receiving parties text message?

I am on Verizon and my phone is the LG VX9600 Versa. Thanks.
