Tethering to a large TV, not a PC!

I am looking for an APP that I can simply tether via USB to my large flat panel display (which is USB 2.0 capable) without paying Sprint for the feature. Is there an APP out there that can do this simple task?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Hi and welcome to the AC Forums Herohero.

Are you wanting to get your TV to use your phone's internet connection so that you can browse the internet on your TV, or are you wanting to get your phone to use your TV's internet connection so that you don't have to pay Sprint for data use?

Sorry for the confusion. I only want to connect my phones usb port to the TV's usb port to view what is already on my phone, just on a larger display. Sprint TV and a host of other features is already part of the data package that I pay for.

So, I guess I wouldn't be tethering, right?

So are you wanting to basically have your phone's screen displayed really huge on your TV? Or are you wanting to get your TV play movies that are stored on your phone's SD card?

Tethering is the act of using your phone's internet connection with other devices. The most common form of tethering would be, say, if you were out in the middle of nowhere with your laptop and mobile phone, your laptop won't have an internet connection, but your phone does. So you could activate tethering on your mobile phone and your laptop would magically detect a new WiFi network in range (which is actually your mobile phone), and your laptop can then connect to it. Thus, you end up using the mobile data connection your phone has with your laptop, and your mobile phone becomes a bit like your broadband WiFi router at home.

Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering

Thanks for clarifying. I'm just trying to have my phone's screen displayed really huge on our TV at the moment, but watching movies from my SD card would also work. We have no TV service available in our home yet- thus we are trying to use our phone entertainment services for the time being. It would be really great to be able to watch something together on the bigger screen instead of individually on a phone. Thanks!

Some Android phones have a TV out port or an HDMI port on them. It depends on your handset. Which one do you have?

If your TV can play movies off of USB flash drives plugged into the TV's USB port then it may be able to play those movies off the phone's SD card if you connect your phone to your TV and mount the drive. However, it would probably be simpler in such situations to simply copy the movies onto a normal flash drive and plug that directly into the TV.

I have no idea if your TV can play movies off USB mass storage devices (like flash drives) or not.

There's no app that I know of that can stream video or the phone's screen to a TV.

The Samsung Galaxy S does have DLNA support of course which would allow you to do this is the TV is DLNA compatible, but is that the phone you have?

We have HTC Heros.

This sounds like a good app to create for the Droid users!

With tethering, can we stream our phones screen onto the other display, or does tethering only allow for internet use?

As far as I know the Hero doesn't have any suitable ports on it to connect to a TV.

Tethering is only used to allow devices to use your phone's internet connection. So, if you have an internet browser on your TV (some do), but didn't have an internet connection (no broadband or anything), you could tether your phone to your TV and the TV would be able to use the internet connection that your mobile phone uses.

This isn't what you're wanting, and it can't do what you're trying to do unfortunately.
