Tether with a VE240

Hi,
Been trying to tether this motorola VE240 without luck. Phone is recognized by MPT but I get an error 777 when I try to connect. I saw an earlier post about tethering and 3G and this phone was not mentioned, so I assume is 1x? Have searched quite a bit but have either missed it or misunderstood it if it's there. Any help is appreciated.

I have a verizon xv6700 I can use, (I found plenty about that one) a much better choice according to what I've read, but I'll have to do an esn swap. If someone could handle that for me I'd like to hear from them.
