test cases to find a virus attachment for a mail to a local network?

How can we identify a virus file is forwarded to a mail in an attachment for a local network..?

1) With out downloading a attachment from the mail..
2) On getting the mail we have to identify the virus.
3) Is it possible or not to test it..
