Test A Cool Application

Is this tower based tracking? You could still translate that into GPS coordinates for some cool mapping!

Anyway, I don't mean to bag on your app...as far as I know there isn't anything else like it available right now. Its just easy to see the future possibilities!

Wirefree,

Is there a conceivable method to use data instead of SMS to do this? I.e. like a tower ping every few minutes or something? Perhaps a user-definable setting in the app somewhere? I don't see how that would be any different than an SMS, and it would be MUCH more user-pocketbook friendly, even for those without an unlimited package, if it's just a quick ping.

Ricky, to clarify part of your question - this app derives location data from CBMs that are delivered to the device at the provider's expense (so to speak), not the user's. CBMs are constantly being delivered to your handset whenever it's on so getting the data is not an issue. SMS comes into play when the app delivers location report to other devices.

So then couldn't it send the data to a server somewhere that shoots off SMS'? I just don't see SMS as the best medium for a high-usage app like this.

That's definitely possible but for a small developer it would like take some time and interest before there is enough reason to invest in a server with these capabilities. The more feasible short-term solution might be an option to send and read reports via the integrated email app within s60.

Some key points of difference:

GSMtracker (vs WrU?)
- Key functionality is LocateMe i.e. "Where am I?"
- Cell tracking is for self only i.e. no communicating with another person
- Not available on 3rd ed.

TrackMe (vs WrU?)
- This is hardware pure-play, all the way (see http://www.traceme.tv/Demo/)
