Terrible Hollywood remakes of Foreign movies

Just thought of this while writing on the 'Taxi' thread.

I am a huge foreign film fan and have about 200 of them at least.

Do you think (tongue in cheek) that Hollywood should be banned from remaking these movies? Has there ever been a remake that is better than the film?

Nowadays I don't even watch them if they are remakes, the awful version of the French classic 'Nikita' was enough to put me off for life.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

There are a few remakes I have enjoyed, even though there is no point in making them, I will always give the remake a chance. Haven't liked a lot, but did enjoy The Ring and Dawn of the Dead. Not as good as the originals though.

Very sad that they are remaking The Eye, no need.

Oh gosh yes.

The first stopped where is needed to be stopped and was excellent.

The remake went past that and beyond into a very sad film. (Same could be said for the remake of the 'Stepford wives' actually..even though the original was not a foreign film)

Said it before - worst has to be "Vanilla Sky" - the original Spanish "Open Your Eyes" is a gripping psychological drama with a knockout twist ending. The remake is so stunningly misjudged on all fronts, it beggars belief. Absolute sh*te. Should've been called "Open Your Arse".

I think you have to take each case on its merits. The Vanishing and Diabolique were travesties but I enjoyed The Ring, Vanilla Sky and Under Suspicion, for example, even though the films on which they're based are arguably superior in all instances.

I must admit that I've watched The Magnificent Seven about a zillion times but the original only once. :o

Vanilla Sky was a terrible remake, but The Ring wasn't bad aslong as you took it as a holywood version, and not a horror film remake. The Ring Two was actually better remade, but mainly because the original is a bit pants there. :D

Anyway, they are butchering Korea now, and remaking My Sassy Girl and Oldboy, so I have nothing but contemp for remakes now. :(

Interesting? They can't really improve on it, and it's not really a film that you can mess with plot or techniquewise (or you're making a different film, not a remake) so 'pointless' would be a better description.

The excellent "Pepe Le Moko" with Jean Gabin (1937) was remade in the US as "Algiers"(1938) with Hedy Lamarr and Charles Boyer. Almost as good.

I refused to even go watch the remake of that as the original was so brilliant. Can't even remember what the remake was called now...something different to do with tree's or something wasn't it?

Thankyou. I was close with trees!:D

Another hate of mine is 'The Birdcage'. The remake was actually not too bad, but I just don't like the movies being touched at all....and 'les cage aux folies' (Or however it is spelt:D) was a classic film. (I am very precious about my French films) :D

I live in dread that they will ever remake some of my other favourites.

One of my favourites ever is 'Le Diner de Cons' and there are rumours that is to be remade, after they did the stage version of it in London.

Noooooooooooooooo!

The original French version of My Father The Hero wasn't bad- unlike the hideous remake also starring Gerard Depardieu.

The Ring films are also far superior to their Hollywood remakes.

And it's not just foreign films...Hollywood pinching British films like the Ladykillers has already been mentioned, these studios are destroying classics! Get Carter (Sly Stallone- what a travesty!), The Italian Job o name a couple. :o
