Tenchu Z, how to use skills + abilities? ?

*I'm new to 360 control! Anyways, I got this game + I love it but I'm having a hard time figuring it out. It was pre-owned so it didn't come with the instruction booklet (nor the case!). I got this skill + it says that in order to do it, I have to press "X DOWN X". I tried a couple times but no luck. So is their a certain way?
