Telling liberal Dad I want to join the Army?

I am 16 and in my junior year of high school. I live in San Jose, California. I am currently enrolled in the International Baccaleurate program and should get my IB diploma by senior year. I have great grades, but I have recently been drawn to joining the military. I have done plenty of research and I am almost 100 percent sure this is what I want to do.

My dilemma is that my father is extremely anti-military. The man hates the wars in the middle east and I'm almost positive he will disagree entirely with my decision. Plus, he has huge expetations for me to go to a real nice university. However, I know this is what I want to do and I am hoping to get his signature so I can enlist earlier. Failing that, I would just like to tell him anyways. I'm puzzled on how to approach this, any ideas yahoo?

Just tell him "Dad, I have something to prove so I am going to get on the government dole at taxpayers expense to go oversees and kill innocent people so that powerful people can build their empire and bankrupt the United States in the process." I'm sure he will understand.

BTW, you missed some history classes in elementary school. The United States was formed during the period of LIBERAL revolutions.

I know it's not what you asked but I'm about to sign my papers for the Navy and if I had any choice I'd take the college rout first. You've got a brain so the military will use you either way, but why not start off as an officer. How much can your Dad say after you have your degree, you're an adult, and it's still what you want to do.

If enlisting (like me) is truly what you want to do, tell him, don't ask. Have all your information and a good plan, then tell him that's what you're going to do. You've got to be confident to make a decision like that any way.

Hope I helped

Good luck

Go Navy

Dude, you're in Full-IB. Go to college and do ROTC, with a scholarship, and become an officer. The Army needs smart people like you to become officers, and leaders. If you don't want to do ROTC, then join the Reserves or National Guard and go to college. You will still be in the military, and will get to deploy. But you can't work that hard in high school to enlist, you've earned more, you can still join the military, but go to college. Thanks for wanting to serve
