Tealbackup vs Backupman

Both are good programs and I'll throw a third into the fray - Resco Backup.

I think all three provide shareware examples and you should use the one that you most prefer. All 3 are stable enough on most platforms so it's a matter of personal preference.

I prefer Resco simply because I've used it for so long and have grown accustomed to it's interface.

I've used BackupMan on two Palms so far (T|C and now the T|X). It hasn't let me down yet. Some people reported problems with it on the T|X, but I think that was due to a combination of other installed apps, because I haven't had a single problem. When I first got my T|X, I poluted it up with some noncompatible apps, and had to restore from BackupMan several times, which went without issue. I just did a restore test the other day, and it worked perfectly.

All that being said, I've never used Resco or Teal, so....

Good luck with your choice.

I'll throw another one into the list. BackupBuddyVFS. This works great for me and the different options for automatic backups is excellent. You can set it to backup after a hotsync, after a set number of minutes, every day at a certain time etc. I think it has the best options for auto backups.

I just finished a several week analysis on many of the backup programs and came up with a short list of Tealbackup, Resco, Backupman, and BackupbuddyVFS.

I picked Resco due to the complete list of features, solid recommendations, and cost.

My feature criteria were: ability to compress, encrypt, schedule backups, incremental updates, and backup speed. Resco won hands down on all counts.

I was coming from Backupman 1.5 and wanted to be sure if it was the right decision to go to 2.0 or go with something else. Note that the upgrade price for the Backupman 1.5 to 2.0 was hardly anything, so it was like buying a whole other program. Even though I had come to rely on the solid restores of BM, the size of the backups and the speed didn't impress me. Although BM2.0 added many features, compression was not one of them.

Your mileage may vary. As someone else said earlier, get the trials and test them out for yourself.

Ron,

Well I also PM'd you on this but no I've never used it. I'm sure it's a good program. It's as I originally said, it's what you are familiar with and knows it works. All of the programs mentioned so far.....well my guess is they all work and they all do as advertised.

I've grown accustomed to Resco and went to them sometime back because they seem to update to the newer devices more quickly then some of the other's but that's a personal observation. TealPoint's programs also are usually revised when new hardware is intro'd.

All are shareware and you can try before you buy and that's all you need to do is pick the one you prefer.

All of the files that are on your Palm are backed up to the backup folder on your PC. The typical path is: C:\program files\Palm\(your user name)\backup.

All program files (except those that have their own conduits) are backed up there. So your PIM (address book, memos, tasks, calendar) are backup up to separate folders under your user name folder from above.

If you've installed other programs that have their own conduits such as Documents to Go or similar - then you'll have to search a little for where those files are backed up but the search is usually either under your username or that program files directory.

Do you need a backup to the SD card - no. Since OS4.1 the desktop's backup is nearly flawless and restores upon a hard reset.

But a card backup does give you some added protection - if you are on the road a lot and do a lot of beta testing - then it's very necessary.

Just today on the plane - I had a hard reset caused by an errant program (beta) and it was nothing for me to restore right from the card and I didn't miss a beat. But if I were hard coded to a desk - probably wouldn't use one.
