Teaching my body to use my core in exercise...?

I am 17 years old and i have a bulging disc in my back and i really need to fix this problem by working on my core so i don't need to have surgery. I have been doing sit ups and working on my core and i have managed to develop a little bit more of abs etc, but i don't know how to teach my body to use the core muscles in my exercise. I play sport lots and for most of it i have been using my back muscles for the 13 yrs i have been playing soccer and i don't know how to teach my body to use the core muscles and stop putting pressure on my back and making the bulging disc worse.
Any suggestions you have would be so very much appreciated. Cheers
