Teaching cats to use the outdoors?

Cats are notorious creatures of habit. They are very reluctant to change their routines, especially when it comes to food, sleeping and litter. Which, of course, is the majority of their day. If they are older cats, I doubt you can change these habits now.

Of course they get into the routine of using the litter box when winter or it is raining. But I have 4 cats who live on 10 acres and will be outside for hours and then rush in and use the litter box.
I was told to buy cheap potting soil and dump it outside and show the cats what a nice easy spot for 'relieving themselves)...I placed one cat on the soil and she looked at me like WTH?? ..moved away quickly and two days later not one cat has used it.
Biodegradable litter is not cheap. (I will not use clay which is not, nor fragranced litter for the cat's and environment's sake)
Any reasonable ideas?
