I had a school dance about 2 months ago, and it was a formal, and I COULD not dance. I told everyone I would go to the dance to hang out, not to dance. I had searched videos and read instructions but nothing helped
Well, I when I went there, I got a lot of Sprite, and drank about 3 glasses, so I was sort of on a sugar rush.
Then I just started off swaying my hips a little. Just bopping back and forth. The entire time I was messing with my bracelet, but I just kept 'bopping'
My friends were all incredible dancers, like the best ones on the floor, so I found that if I surrounded myself with people who danced better than me, I looked better dancing.
Gradually, I found the more I 'bopped', I kind of started letting go more and more and just started absentmindedly moving my feet a bit.
I kept drinking Sprite, which probably was the main reason I let go so much, and within an hour, absolutely everyone was dancing all-out.
So, I mimicked them. I kept my eyes on the best dancers, and danced close to them, and if they threw their hands in the air, I copied them. If they started messing with their hair, I copied them.
Of course, I waited a couple minutes before doing it, so not to look TOO obvious, but the main idea to is to look at what other people are doing and RELAX.
And then, by the end of the 3 hours, I was dancing just as well as everyone else, even better than most.
Drink lots and lots of Sprite. I was on a crazy sugar rush, which helped loads. And realize- no one really cares how you dance. No one really knows what they are doing, so just have fun doing it.
For years, I fretted over dancing and usually just sat at dances, but once I finally let go of insecurities, I was able to have the best time of my life.
Edit- Also, I forgot. Smile. A LOT. I'm talking constantly. If you look like you are having fun, then your dancing looks 100 times better. Even if you are the best dancer in the entire world, if you dance frowning and looking miserable and embarrassed, you won't look really good.
Have fun!
