...physical appearance...? ...reflect an unwillingness to confront one's own mortality and the impermanence of one's physical being? i.e. "Here's a visible, indelible symbol of mastery over my own body. It'll be here FOREVER."

Or does it show a certain acceptance? "I've only got this body for a lifetime, I might as well modify it and decorate it however i want while it's mine to enjoy!"

i mean, think, even if you get a tattoo on impulse, at some point you consider its permanence. What's your take on this?
