target mountain bikes trail worthy?

i was using my friends mountain bike, he got it from REI or something like that. but i know its an expensive bike. i wanted to start mountain biking and was wondering if the walmart or target brand bikes will do the job? there is a trail by my house that everyone in the state goes to to go mountain biking, so i was wondering if i could use one of them
