Tank swap VL800 and C50?

Hi. This is my first post.

I crashed a Vl800 two years ago. I decided to rebuild it. I have replaced the frame, front end, and both rims not to mention a whole bunch of misc. It doesn't take long to spend $100 at the parts counter. I bought matching fenders and tank of another color and another year. Never gave it any thought until today I got the new tank out of the box. Will it work with a VL bike? Can I make it work on an older bike? This bike is done all but the trottle cables. Now I am screwed.

Somebody please tell me there's an easy solution. I don't want to convert to injection.

I don't want to replace everything I just want to make that tank work.

Thanks,
Jerry

Yup, you have three choices:
1- convert your existing bike to fuel injection, which will cost you big $$$ between the plumbing and the electronics.

2- Buy a tank that fits your bike. Used tanks are not that expensive, and having one painted to match should not cost you more than about $100.

3- Check the differences in the tanks. If the mounting points are the same, then you can most likely weld up where the fuel pump goes in the injected tank and weld in the fuel feed area of your original tank.

Minor correction.... The mounting points are the same on the frame but... I think the contours on the underside of the tanks are different so this would be a problem also. The C50 tanks are contoured for the throttle body and the Volusia tanks are contoured for the Carb. So the better option would be to cut the bottom off the crashed tank and weld it onto the new tank. But by the time you did that you would be better off buying a used Volusia tank.

I think I can make an adapter plate to make the smaller guage assembly work. Then drill the plate for a pass-thru nipple. Put a piece of fuel line on the inside with a heavy "clunk" on the end. On the outside just using an inline filter/check valve. Think it will work?

I have another Volusia tank but it is going to be painted with a set of Indian Chief fenders for another VL that I am working on. I don't want to paint a 2002 tank to 2005 colors the oval striping alone is way ridiculous $$. I stood at the parts counter and looked at a couple of micro mylar pictures and said "give me that bolt...that bolt...that one...". Astronomical! I don't like to see how many dollars I can fit into the smallest bag. I am looking for a 2001 black and white front fender but I don't want to buy a new set. I think the tank can be used. Also the modifications from the previous post will not alter the tank at all. I'll post pics of the attempt.
