Tank is too small for my fish!?

If your snook is a male, he may grow to be 18 inches - even without the other fish, he will be too large for the 55 gallon. The "inch of fish per gallon" rule only works well for fish five inches and under - after that it begins to get exponential.
My recommendation would be to see if a local pet store would buy it from you or possibly exchange it for another fish.
 
So I have two tanks, a 90 gallon and a 55 gallon. My 90 is stocked with a jack dempsey, green terror and a fire eel. My 55 has a parachromis loiselle, red bay snook and a jewel cichlid. I mixed the African jewel with soft water fish because I read that they are not from lakes like many common african cichlids, the are from soft water rivers. Anyway the fish get along great (I don't even see a hint of aggression anymore and they are all adults). The water chemistry is fine and both tanks have at least 6X the filtration necessary (I collect canister filters obsessively). I am worried about the 55 gallon tank because I read that the snook needs 100 gallons. It seems happy and healthy in a 55, and I can't buy a larger tank due to weight issues (2nd floor apartment). I'm not sure what to do, I'm doing my best to take care of it but according to a website its not enough. Do you think it will be ok or should I get rid of it?
 
I would get rid of it now while its still small or medium enough to sell and somebodies gonna want it. Unless you can buy another 90 gallon tank and then you can keep him most likely. Main thing is keep the water clean and take the best care of him while you can. If he grows too large or gets stunted then it happens, what can you do without the proper tank. I would give away at a medium size though. Try one of your local fish clubs and see if you can't get some money off of him.
