My girlfriend and I have been dating for about a year and a half, and we just moved in together. Our relationship is based mostly on the chemistry that we have together, rather than things that we have in common. We're in college, and I'm a microbiology major, and she's into humanities and other arts, like films, books, and music. Don't get me wrong, here; I watch movies, read novels and other recreational reading, and listen to music (who doesn't?).
One thing that I can't do that she can, however, is dissect and analyze aspects of these various arts, things like identifying themes or interpreting what the artist or director was trying to say. I mean, most of this type of stuff is subjective and up for interpretation anyway, but still, I feel like stuff like that always makes sense to me whenever someone is talking about it, but I just can't make myself do the work of breaking things down.
So yeah, sorry to drag it out, but basically, how do I do that? Is there some sort of way of looking at things that I've never been exposed to or am incapable of or something? Am I just doomed to roam the earth an unsophisticated donk for the rest of my life?
Forgot to say that I am asking because I can see that our lack of things in common is sort of straining our relationship lately. Thanks.
