TalkBack:Tenchi Muyo! Series

Cool. Thanks for the break down. This was one of the first shows that I watched that introduced me to anime. I remeraber watching this on the Toonami block in the afternoons. I enjoyed the first two OVA's and Tenchi Universe. Just recently saw the 3rd OVA at an anime convention a month back and I am planning to purchase them. I have the Universe box set from Pioneer but missed out on the first OVAs.

Thats why its better to get them at used at your local/closest FYE/Suncoast. Or off of Amazon, Universe & Tokyo are fairly cheap, but the origional OVA's are sadly in the 30-60 dollar racket most of the time.

I know, I lucked out by getting the first two discs on Right Stuf, but the 3 and 4 cost me a total of 60 dollars.

A bonus though, I got a Sasami coin in one of them.

I lucked out and got the Perfect Collection and it's perfect. I have all three series japanese/english. I have the three movies and GXP came with it ^_^ lucky me.

I basically like this series for nostalgia back when it was on Toonami.

I now have the uncut DVD sets and have only started rewatching the series. One of the main reasons keep this series around is because of Kiyone. She is so full of hotness.

Not as good as the original OAVs, but much better than the later Tokyo series.

I just got the first discs from Netflix.

How the heck were you guys able to watch Pioneer's dub? I'm even doing the Nostalgia Critic's "I'M ACTING" near after every line.

.......................(Anger Rising,)

Dude, Tenchi was one of Pionners best dub, and if you think that Funi's voice for Ryoko is better then Pionners, or that Pionners dub is bad...all I can say is WHAT WRONG WITH YOU BOY! (DO YOU HAVE THE BRAIN WORMS!!!)

Seriously aside from Trigun, its one of there BEST DUBS!

Also agree with whoever said that thing about Kiyone... (Angry women are attractive...LULZ!)

Maybe one the reason why I like Tenchi Muyo so much is the animation and color.
I really don't know why, but the color in the series is really great. And the animation, not bad in the 90's.
And the OST, wow! Just wow. That show got its own tune that it can call it on own.

Well, I'm not surprise. The dub came out in the 90's. And most 90's anime dub really are bad. Its very rare you find yourself a decent dub.
Though, like I said, I kinda knew some or even most ppl will find the dub annoying. But, like I said, the dub did came out in the 90's. So, you shouldn't be surprise that the dub is off track.

Oh, so I am the only one that find Washu dub voice kinda cute & Ryoko dub voice kinda sexy? Hmmm, I guess so.

Guess what I found.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzmNRv7yVfk

How could I say FUNi's voices are better? I'm just now watching the series now.

Well let's see, I'm on episode 6 now (We Need Tenchi) and I flash through the dub on occasion so maybe I'm missing a lot or maybe I've just been spoiled by really good dub performances so it can come off as bitter but, I find Pioneer Tenchi sounding very boring. He sounRAB like dub Ueki from The Law of Ueki (also dubbed by Geneon) as in they carry that "I'm clearly in an acting studio." I will admit that Ryoko doesn't sound too bad nor does Sasami or Tenchi's grandfather (who I must say puts on an even better performance than the original) but Ayeka is....wow really? I mean, she very obviously sounRAB like she's being played like a relatively older person. I don't know, it's just that I've seen that type of character Ayeka sound better by other voice actors.

(Huh. I see the VA was cast in nearly everything else Tenchi related so I guess people liked her a lot. I just didn't care for it)

EDIT: I think Geneon's best dubs were Trigun, Samurai Champloo, ZoiRAB and Paranoia Agent....basically, most of the stuff they ran on CN. Oh and Black Lagoon. That's a show that needed to be in English.

You know what I've figured out my problem with this dub. Let's just ignore the fact that it's a 90's dub and like King said, dubs weren't so hot back then but that's not important. And it was cemented for me in episode 6 when Washu appears. (BTW, Norio Wakamoto is in this? Now I know it's awesome!)

Okay so I hear original Washu and she sounRAB, well, like a somewhat middle-aged sounding adult. But I switch to dub Washu for comparison and I am very clearly aware that this is a relatively older woman not even really trying. It's like FUNimation with Frieza's voice. But that's not even the point. The point is, the performances are quite stale. I am aware that these voice actors and actresses are reading off a script. Not even that but I just feel that there are so many mismatches it's like "Oh so this is where the guy who cast Nunnally in Code Geass got his first job." It just doesn't have any emotion or feeling in it. Others seem to love this and as long as they have no problem with it, it doesn't really matter. We're going to have different opinions anyway.

(But again, I will admit. Pioneer Ryoko fits rather well)

Oh wow! Tenchi Muyo! Now that's an anime show that brings me back to them good ol' days.
Everyone has their "first animes..." that gets them into it, and I'm no different. However, it was Sailor Moon that ended up being the show that introduced me to anime. It was the reason that got me tuning in Toonami back in 2000-2001ish. But.... Tenchi Muyo, being the second show, was THE ONE that got me hooked and made me a fan of anime (and made a fan of every type of animation later on, rediscovering cartoons I watched as a kid, like Aladdin). Anyway, it was the story, the characters, their adventures, the music, animation, everything! This show really drew me in with an array of female characters that interested me (even moreso than any of the ones in Sailor Moon). By the time I watched the OVAs, the 1st TV series (Universe), and even the 2nd TV series (Tenchi in Tokyo) off of Toonami, I wanted to go through the whole adventure again. Even to this day, its still one of my most favorite anime series.

I was going to list everything out, but soundmonkey44 and others before described everything better than I could.

You know, as silly as those digi-bikinis are, I always though the one they put on Ryoko looked best. Purpleish-spectre blue seems to look really good on her. At least she had one that looked good on her. It kept reminding me of No Need For Swimsuits episode of Tenchi Universe...

Well, it may not be one of the girls, but I always thought Kagato's english dub voice (both versions since they're voiced by the same actor) was sexy. To me anyway... >.> He just had that deep, silky, and smooth villain voice (kind of like Jafar's voice). Okay! I admit it, I bit of a Kagato fangirl (for some reason, I slightly prefer Universe's version, maybe its his green hair...).

Like I said, I'm not surprise.
But, I do find the dub decent.
Passing the pokemon level dub and the first 3 series of DBZ dub, but it doesn't reach the Trigun level dub.
Its not the worst, but, its not that good as well.
Its a pass, to me I mean.

Though, I have to say on the 3rd OVA (FUNi), they did improve a lot. The voice are the same, but there's more feeling into it.

The dub was incredible for me as a kid and I kind of think Ayeka's was fitting. Considering Jurains live a heck of a long time, I think Pioneer was making fun of that and her spoiled attitude.
I think Washu did not fit a lot of times but... well, when I first saw her adult form I guess her voice did start fitting a little. An adult trying to be youthful could have a voice like that.

My guess is that Pioneer did the voices with OVA in mind since some of the voices fell out when Universe and Tokyo came in.
