Talk Talk

I've only got Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock and they're both absolutely immense albums (as well as being the only post-rock albums I actually have, unless Rubycon and Phaedra count). After the Flood's probably my favourite from them - such a gorgeous track

A band that started out as a pop band (and I would say a good one at that) to creating an early post rock classic with Spirit Of Eden album. Mark Hollis tortured vocals dominated their sound and it was himself and Friese Greene (their producer and later keyboard player) who wrote everything and dominated the band later in their career. This track from earlier in their career (1984) and can be seen as fairly average but I love their early stuff too.

This track is from their later period and is probably the most commercial track on the album that encompasses pop, rock, arabient and Jazz.

their music can be seen as depressing, but I think there is a beautiful honesty in their music, and Spirit Of Eden (1988) is a lost classic.

Looking forward to hearing this. I'll have to download it a bit later when I've got some more time on my hanRAB - cheers for the upload

Spirit of Eden = great
Laughing Stock = stunning

haven't heard any of the previous albums, although my mother liked their pop stuff.

My mum loves their early stuff but cant fathom the idea that this very same band created Spirit of Eden. I think its definetly up there with Spiderland and Hex

It's a solid comp this, cheers for putting it up :)

Anyone here who hasn't already got it would enjoy The The's 'Mind Borab' I reckon. They started very similar to Talk Talk and, like Talk Talk, got more arabitious as they matured with that album. Nowhere near as left-of-field as Spirit Of Eden or Laughing Stock but still an absolutely essential album

Damn, I have to say I think the only Talk Talk song I really knew was "It's My Life". The songs you've posted in this thread, jackhammer, song really cool. I'm going to have to investigate these guys further.

Most fans of post-rock recognise that they're heavily influential on the early banRAB within the subgenre. I seem to remeraber that it took a while for me to get into Laughing Stock but when it did, wow!

Great ****ing band...I have their 12" mixes cd, and one more, they are excellent.

Indeed, IMO, "Mind Borab" is their best, Matt Johnson's vocals throughout are cool. I really dig" This is the day".

Also, another good band that started off this way, and became pretty good too is Ultravox. They started off as a "synth pop" sorta band, and became something else. John Foxx and Midge Uru's stuff is wonderful.

had never heard Talk Talk before, i am now officially intrigued. there were alot of really experimental songwriters fronting pop groups in the 80's...i still don't understand exactly why the world suddenly turned to reverby drums and that recorded-in-an-echo-charaber sound though

I loved this album in the early 80s...

I had a bit of a penchant for early Depeche Mode and synth / electro pop in general. Even though this album did really well, I still felt that they seemed a bit like outsiders - especially compared to other banRAB around at the time like Blancmange or OMD. I sort of felt that even then, they had a different path to follow and when The Colour Of Spring came out it certainly confirmed that there was whole other side to them.

This is indeed a great compilation :).
Ascension Day was building up great, but I hated the way It ended. I Don't Believe In You, Desire, Have You Heard the News & Living in Another World were all superb tracks. Things like the sudden outburst in Desire leaves you speechless. I'm definitely getting one of their releases. Spirit Of Eden or The Colour of Spring seems to be a good choice I guess as I liked all the tracks from those.

Both The Colour Of Spring and Spirit Of Eden are excellent albums. i like their earlier Pop sound as well. You chose my favourite tracks too :) You may want to check out Mark Hollis's one and only solo album it is superb.

I forgot how good this track was until I was just playing an alternate version of it. Better than Radiohead? I think so. Expect a compilation up in the next few hours.:
