Taking the plunge and getting Blu-ray

So thanks to my work for making me reduntant, I'll have some extra cash to play with, so looking to pick up a Blu-ray player and was wondering what films people could recommend for me?

I've got a 5.1 set up so I'm looking for discs that will take advantage of both sound and vision.

Try and get a Panasonic player as they appear to be the only brand that , so far , have not had to issue firmware updates to correct a playback problem.

Even the PS3 had to do one last year.

If you are a big fan and maybe like the Criterion Collection you might want a multiregional player , but these are

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
Into The Blue
Are You Being Served? on DVD is given a glorious fresh new edge with Mrs.Slocombe's wigs given great definition.

What's this playback problem? I've had my blu ray player since last year and so far had no problems without getting any firmware stuff, even Avatar played amazingly well.

I hope not upgrading anything will stop me playing any blu ray discs in the future? or is it just concern for certain extras?

If you get a Blu-Ray with multi-region for DVD, be aware that the DVD multi region could get reset with a firmware update, unless the player is hardware chipped, which most are not.

It happened to me, with a Pioneer player.

All Players will at some point need upgrades to keep up with the ever growing industry and should be seen as a positive. As far as the PS3 goes, upgrades are always ongoing as the machine does more and more, it gets used all of the time in our house, and is only used as a games console for about 20% of it's use.

OP, There are plenty of bargains around, do some research, but in my opinion, you would do well to get a PS3, just check out what it does, it's incredibly inexpensive for that reason. Oh, and the Bluray is one of the highest rated!

Thanks for the suggestions guys - I'm going to look around and upgrade to 7.1 methinks, still deciding on which player i'm going to get though. I know the PS3 is held in high regard but as a currently an owner of a 360 I dunno if i'll use it much for the games side but that could all change.

I also had a look at the above thread, lots of great ideas however I didnt see any mention of Sin City, I've seen clips of it and it looks amazing, what do other people think?

I have Sin City on Bluray and I have to say it is totally amazing, I purchased it on release....you should be able to pick it up for a decent price now I would think?

Hardly a rip off, the public were told plenty of times that new editions will be released later on in the year. So it's your own fault if you buy it now with the intention of getting a better edition later on...

Avatar is only the second BR disc I own, but I have to say, connected via my PS3 to my projector the image was easily sharper and more detailed at 110" than DVRAB are on my 52" TV. Makes me want to upgrade my projector to 1080p just to see how good it might be, but then I'd have to upgrade my Lumagen which is only 1080i, and that would be over

My Panasonic model is 3 years old and it's played all the discs that have caused problems for others without ever needing an upgrade.
Every other brand has needed upgrades but only to correct the odd operational glitch like the PS3 had with Star Trek 6 and the Pioneer players had with some Trek discs.

The PS3 updates rarely have anything to do with Bluray , they are all connected to the other features and Bluray has final profile 2 so there are no further features to be added so with the exception of glitches like some players had with Avatar there is no reason to expect to have to update your player in order to play any Bluray discs.

Ultraviolet- your Curtis player will not play Snow White nor the Disc 6 in The Prisoner boxset which is a dvd .

If your player is Profile 1.1 it won't access BD-Live ,but you are not missing anything.

Cheap makes like Curtis do seem to cut corners when producing hardware but where they do it is a mystery as some modern good branRAB had problems with the new copy protection on Avatar, yet the Curtis obviously did not

As I said , updates for the PS3 are "rarely" related to Bluray.
In addition , 3D is not part of the original Bluray spec and in fact the PS3 is the only currently available player that can be updated for 3D.

No standalones can so I doubt the gimmick will make many waves anyway

I'm not at all bothered about the BD Live, just want to watch the film. I've got a Tevion one, and it played Avatar fine and dandy. :) And someone mentioned 3D, I'm not at all bothered about that on a home system either.
