Taking Ativan during the day

Hello, I am new to this board. I have had issues with anxiety for years but only in the past 2 weeks did I say anything to my doctor. She prescribed Ativan since I said I didn't want a daily medication, just something I could take as needed.

My problem is that I was advised to only take the Ativan at night since it causes drowsiness and sometimes dizziness. But I feel the anxiety the most first thing in the morning and also sometimes in the early afternoon. Since I can't take the Ativan during the day, I just sit at work and suffer, which defeats the whole purpose of me speaking to my doctor about a solution.

Has anyone taken Ativan during the day and been ok? I don't want to endanger myself or anyone else, but if I can't take it when I feel anxious it's of no use to me.

Thanks.

I met a lady in our local hospital who takes Ativan every day before she goes to
work for an eight hour day.It didn't bother her a bit.I have gotten a prescription
again for Ativan, which I haven't needed for four years.I need some help now, since I have been widowed.Hold your head high, when you go to work.Another option is to keep one or two in your purse in case of need. That's what I'd do,minus the purse.Lots of luck. Bill

I used to take 1mg of ativan right in the morning. It was helpful and didn't make me that tired if not at all. I would rather feel a little tired anyways myself than to feel severely anxious throughout the day.

But everyone reacts differently to the med. This is just my experience with it.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to try it today since I woke up, as usual, with high anxiety. Other than feeling a little drowsy, I was fine. I was able to work, to compose e-mails that made sense, etc. I did take it after I arrived at work though, in case it affected my driving.

Now my problem is that I took it 6 1/2 hours ago and I can feel it has worn off...the anxiety is back. I don't want to take another one now since I'll be driving home in a half hour, plus I don't want to have to take ANOTHER one at bedtime, since my doctor prescribed 30 pills and I predicted they'd last me 3 months. I guess I can hope the anxiety goes away, or at least is only every few days so I don't get hooked on this stuff (which my doctor warned me about...I had to withdraw from Tramadol and it sucked).

Oh well, I guess I'll be Nervous Nelly until 6 pm or so...

I've been prescribed .5mg of Ativan every morning since March 2008. It goes through me fine and I'm used to it, didn't make me tired at all even in the beginning.

A couple months ago I started getting panic attacks and got prescribed 1mg of Ativan 4 times a day, didn't feel tired from that either. So you're right, some people are more tolerant.

Do you feel better now knowing I take it right when I wake up as well as how Under used to?

How about if you try taking it on your day off so your home to know how you'll react to it in the am?
Cindy

How much ativan do you take? Depending on how much you take you could always cut it in half and just take that much.

my best advice would be to get on a daily anti depressent that works for anxiety. This will make your anxiety symptoms much much better in the long run. Ativan can then be taken in certain situations where you feel anxiety coming on. I have taken Celexa daily for about 10 years, and Activan only in those sitiuations that produce extrme anxiety for me.
