Tailbone Pain?

Yesturday I was sitting on the floor with my back against a desk chair for a few hours. After getting up I noticed a slight achy pain in what I think is my tailbone. The pain is mostly at the top of my butt crack, so I am guessing that is my tailbone (please correct me if I am wrong). When I started walking the pain went away. I now only feel it when I lean back and sit on that area it hurts. As long as I sit right on my butt cheeks I am fine.

Is is possible that I did some real damage by sitting like that for so long or is this something that will go away with time?

Also, is there anything I can do to help with the discomfort?

Thanks

Sometimes when you put too much pressure too long on your tail bone, it becomes sensitive, almost like it is bruised. There are a lot of nerves that run through there. Unless you are hit by something in that area or actually fall on it, you are not likely to have done any damage.

Think of it as sort of a bruise. I used to sit on a concrete stoop when I was younger visiting with friends and had the same symptoms you had after doing so, so I quit sitting on hard surfaces. Take a hot bath and soak it. Sit on soft surfaces and if you cannot, put a pillow where you sit. It should go away soon.

If it gets significantly worse (which I doubt) or does not get better, there is the possibility that you have sciatica which you may not even have been aware of.

Keep us posted!

Thanks so much Lindaru

I have a concrete porch and do sit there sometimes. It usually is not for very long though. I usually feel it after sitting there, but it goes away after a few minutes.

I knew I should not have been sitting on the floor like that so long yesturday, but it was the only was to see the television.

I am having the same problem. I have a protruding tailbone I think. Nothing big, noticeable or gross, but I can definately feel the bone that sticks out when I sit. Is that unusual? Also, the other poster mentioned sciatica. I also have chronic back pain which I thought was really more arthritis because when I get up in the mornings, my back hurts!! But when I walk for awhile, it tends to settle down (the pain that is) but I guess my question is, I always thought that sciatica was only present when it was in the back of your leg pain is that not so? Can you still have sciatica without the leg pain? If so, then sciatica can cause tailbone discomfort?
