T3's bright screen shopping experience

Hello fellow Palmers

I think some prospect T3 buyers may gain value from the following experience.
As discussed in this thread PalmOne delivers (or used to) two kinds of screens for its T3:
A Sony made, distinguished by 4 orange LED lights at the bottom and another screen.
The former is brighter than the latter.

There's no way to predict which screen you'll be getting before you open the box. PalmOne won't admit there's an issue here. My first T3 unit was purchased from Amazon.COM. Very good return policy (30 days money back guarantee) and a good price (about $330). Nevertheless the screen wasn't the "right one". The T3 is going back to teh Amazon forest. Four Staples stores were willing to open a box for me with no purchase. None was the "good screen." I didn't buy.

Finally I ordered another unit from MPSuperstores. Price was as good as Amazon's and there's a 10 day return policy. No other discount on-line retailer would give you that.
(No other brick and mortar store would open the box for me either).
The unit came in today, and surprise! Although the screen doesn't look like the Sony screen ? no four orange LEDS at the bottom, the screen is brighter than the other one purchased from Amazon. PalmOne's other screen vendor may have improved the quality to meet Sony's specs. Who knows.

Are we overly anal retentive about our PDAs? I don't think so. This baby sits in your palm and it better be as good as it can be.

To all those who still aren't sure if the T3 is for them ? it's a great machine. The slider is a great idea. I love it. The T3 is compact and ergonomic, and gives you more real estate when you need it. IMHO the effective simplicity of the T3 overshadows the bells and whistles of the Sony TH55. Too many buttons there, and too much screen clutter.

To all those who bitched and moaned about the Graffiti 2 ? WTF? It's piece of cake.
A lot more natural than Graffiti 1. Need retraining? No kidding. Was Graffiti 1 your first foreign language? If you stop learning your brain will degenerate?

Coming soon: how to use two PDAs on one PC.

Is that ture? i can barely believe that! It's like our consumors is cheated by the Palmone, isn't it?

Do you think, the two kinds of T3 is assembly in different places, and sell in different areas, facing different consumors?

EZ asked about why we fuss about Graffiti 2.

Graffiti 2 is not hard to learn. However, there are some things about it that drive me mad sometimes. When I am making the 'T', sometimes the command line thing pops up at the bottom of the screen. Also, the backspace stroke sometimes produces periods rather than back spacing.

Although it is not as natural as Graffiti 2, Graffiti 1 did not take as long when detecting the various strokes and it did it accurately.

Some of us Palm users started with the original Palm Pilot or Palm III and mastered Graffiti I. palmOne originally discontinued G1 because of some patent violation with Xerox's input system. Although I like G1 better, I thought palmOne had a good reason for discontinuing it. However, Xerox's patent was recently revoked and nothing legally is stopping palmOne from using G1 again. By stating that I want Graffiti 1 reinstated on Palm devices, I am not suggesting that Graffiti 2 be completely removed. Palm devices should have both versions of Graffiti installed in the rom. Palm users should have an option available to select the version of Graffiti they prefer.

I hope you can comprehend what the fuss is about now.

Your post answered my riddle on the replacement T3 I got from PalmOne. I had a digitizer problem with my first unit and got a new replacement. The latter's screen was not as bright as my first and was more bluish, so I returned it. The second replacement's screen was as good as my original T3.

I was wondering then how the new replacement (first one) could be so different from my original one. That means it could not have been a Sony screen (but I never got to look at the number of lights because I have not read your post yet).

My new replacement has four orange lights.
