T3 with reinstalled desktop

Several months ago I gave my pastor a T3. He had to reinstall his desktop software recently. He is having problems in getting his information from his T3 to sync to his desktop software. I went to his office today. I reset the sync to have the handheld overwrite the desktop. It was a very fast sync and none of his information from his T3 installed into his desktop software. I think I may know the solution, but I need to verify with everyone here. He has sync'd several times prior to me coming to his office. These sync's were to sync files and hence a backup file has been created. If we go into his palm folder and delete the backup file, have the handheld overwrite the desktop, and then sync again...will this fix the problem and create a new backup file?
Thanks,
Carol

Ok,

She's looking at the title and saying to herself, you dumb animal, I already said I had forced the hotsync conduit to have the Handheld overwrite the Desktop.

Yes, check it on the handheld (someone could have turned these off by accident) and look at the log on the hotsync on the desktop. If the log reports that it's syncing the basic PIM databases then the deletion of the backup won't make any difference. It could be that the desktop is not looking at the correct user name file.

If your Pastor selected a "new" user file the first time he hot sync'd and created two different User ID's - he may be looking at the wrong user file on the desktop. Thus, checking of the hot sync log would confirm or deny this.

Post the hotsync log - if there is still a question and let's see what it reveals?

Here is the log from his laptop. He sent it to me in email. I have not seen the sync log on his T3 yet, but he says it is the same.

HotSync operation started 08/16/05 15:11:30

To Everyone:
A note two or more. His hotsync name is benmaton, but as you can see it is abreviated as benmat. That shouldn't be causing a problem should it? I have an appointment to see him late morning tomorrow (Thursday). I have thought of three things I am going to try. I am going to check his conduit setup on this T3 to make sure everything is checked. I am also going to change his backup folder name to backup.old. Then I will change the conduit action on his laptop to have the handheld overwrite the desktop and this sync again. I will see where this gets me.

Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks,
Carol

Carol:

You may have applied the flash update to the T3 but there is a Palm Conduit update located http://www.palm.com/us/support/tungstent3/ which needs to be installed and could be part of the problem as well.

Also, I'd still double check the possibility of more than one user name based upon your post.

Ok, with regards to changing his backup folder to "old", this will have no impact on the conduit sync.

If you look at the sync log it refers to the four PIM files as sync OK. ie, calendar, memos, tasks, contacts as sync ok. The back up for the master PIM files is not saved in the backup directory. If you look in the backup directory you'll find all of the added software backed up there. You won't find files called, address.dat.

It's stored in independent directories under the specific user name. That is: Addresses (Contacts) are stored under the user name\address\ sub folder. In each of these subfolders you'll see a file called or similarly called: address.dat (data), address.aba (archived), address.bak (backup)

You'll see this nomenclature for datebook, memos, todo etc. This is where the Palm Desktop gets it's info from is these seperate subfolders.

Ok, also - don't bother checking the hotsync settings on the T3 - if they were turned off - they would not have showed in the log as they overwrite the conduit on the PC anyway.

So my recommendations: Install the Palm Conduit as noted in the hyperlink (it's about 2/3 of the way down the page). Soft Reset the T3, Set the Conduit Manager to Handheld overwrites Desktop and see what happens after the sync.

Double check that there is not a second user name prior to all of the above and then you should be good.

Another thought is that he's using the classic Palm apps like Datebook instead of Calendar. If that's the case, there are no conduits for the classic PIM apps so nothing will get transferred to the desktop.

Mystery solved....
First - I gave my pastor his PDA some time ago. I did not remember which one I gave him and I asked him. He carries it in a leather case. I asked him and he told me a T3 without checking. In my appointment with him, I discovered it was really a Tungsten E. So, we started all over, deleted the desktop software, restarted the computer, reinstalled the appropriate desktop software, restarted the computer, synched, and VIOLA - everything safe, sound, and back to normal - PDA and desktop talking to each other nicely....problem solved.
Thank you alll for your assistance.....A good learning experience.
