I am considering getting a palmOne SDIO WiFi Card for my T3, does anyone know what the reliability and speed is like. I am going to be in Hong Kong this week, so I will be checking out the prices at an earea I found where there is a bunch of computer shops. I have found the prices are generaly pretty good compared to Australia.

Thanks in advance

As far as I know, the WifI card is only available direct from PalmOne. Then again, one never knows what's available in HK.:)

All the reports I've read is that the WiFi card is pretty reliable and fast. The downside is that there's no additional memory on the card so anything you need to run along with a web connection will have to fit in RAM.

The best place in Hong Kong to check for PDA accessories is at the Wanchai Computer Centre. It is located between the Wanchai MTR Station exit B and the Southern Playground on Hennesy Road. The exit is right next to an elevated walkway which leads to the Immigration Tower. This shopping center is a paradise for anyone wishing to build or upgrade computers. There are lots of shops selling all kinds of PDAs, screen protectors, accessories, and small electronic gadgets. I go there at least once a week. They have just started selling the T5 for 3,180 HKD ($408 USD). This is how much the T3 was when I first got it. The T3's price has dropped to around 2,500 HKD ($321 USD). Some of the shops allow you to trade in used handhelds for a reasonable trade-in value.

If you go there, you'll love it.:)

Thanks dwinget,

I am probably not going to have time this trip, I have been going to the Golden shopping centre at Sham Shui Po. I don't know if you know this place, heaps of gear. I am heading home today but coming back in Feb, so I can check out your suggestion then.

PDANev, I got the Palm WiFi card in September and it's been great! Here's my original thread:

My T3 and WiFi card does not completely replace my notebook, but is a lot faster and handier for many tasks. I also picked up a PCtel WiFi finder to hang on my keychain and am able to retrieve and answer email, sync my AvantGo, and surf the web anyplace I can find an unsecure signal, as well as around my house. My only concern is the power drain. I picked up a Palm PowerToGo to charge my T3 during those times I am not near a power outlet, an automobile cigarette lighter socket, or the Palm cradle. ... While I wish the T3 (and T5) had built-in WiFi, the card is a reasonable alternative.

Reliability is OK and speed is good, but as OldBlue implies, it really only works at home or if you can find an insecure WLAN - it's not good at connecting to public hotspots.

So while it's OK for personal use, it's not going to convert business users over from PPC. And even for personal use, connecting via a Bluetooth adapter on the PC is simpler in the long run and uses less battery power, even if the range is less.

I wrote up my experiences here if anyone's interested:
