Hi everyone I am a completely new user to PDA and have just purchased a Tungston T3 PDA (if it ever arrives). My question is I already use gps with my laptop and a usb gps receiver, I have also bought a copy of tomtom navigator europe 3 can I use the usb gps receiver ( without buying a new bluetooth unit ) I already have for this pda and if so what other items do I need to purchase to be able to use this in my car. All help with what I need to do this would be greatly appreciated so I am prepared WHEN my PDA arrives

Lucky you to be able to get a T3 at this stage.. I got mine less than 3 months back and now there's none to get at all in this country (I wanted to get a spare when I realized P1 stopped the production.. this is the most useful PDA I've ever tried, and I just more and more appreciate the incredible small form factor, all due to the slider. Too bad stopping now, P1!)

As for navigation: I don't know how/if the USB GPS unit can be used, sorry. As for TomTom, it's great. I own TomTom Navigator for Palm, and TomTom's Bluetooth GPS unit. I'm a bit uncertain about what exactly you mean by "tomtom navigator europe 3", as that is not a description I immediately recognize.. software, or maps? Be aware that the product called "TomTom Navigator 3" isn't for Palm, it's for PPC. The software product codes for Palm versions start with "1B" while the PPC versions start with "1C" (as in "1B50.092" which is "TomTom Navigator for Palm, Nordic version, Bluetooth". The 1B00.092 version is the wired (non-BT) version, and so on. The TT3/PPC versions would be the same, but starting with 1C)

It's a possibility that your USB GPS can't be used, however there are a couple of utilities you can download to start checking it out (edit: Uh, you said you didn't have your T3 yet.. but anyway these are great additions to TomTom)

http://www.cetusgps.dk/ (the beta version also works with BT GPS devices)
http://core.de/~coto/projects/cotogps/

Both are free GPS programs for Palm.

Thanks for the reply, I will check which tomtom software I have, but I was assured it was for the palm os. As far as the T3 goes, it is a factory refurbished unit that I have bought on Ebay maybe you can look at a seller called luzertech or visit their website at www.luzerntech.com they are very big company in Dublin Germany and the USA that deal in factory refurbished PDAs.
anyway thanks again for the info, I will now await delivery of my T3

The palm version of TomTom navigator (just bought one after Tor's reply a few discussions down) has everything you need in the box except the T3 itself.

Depending on which version you have bought, you will either have a "wired" or bluetooth receiver. Also, all the cables and holders you will need to power it up in the car or at home and a car holder.

The software DOES allow for other wired or bluetooth receivers to be used but I doubt if a USB one would work (Palm's don't have USB).

Thanks GerryC,
unfortunately the tomtom software I bought is second hand and I only got the CDs. I got tomtom navigator 3 for palm and tomtom navigator 3 maps western europe. As I cannot try these yet (because still have no PDA, they lost it somewhere in Belgium) No cables, holder or GPS where included although the CDs are original, I will just have to hope it works by just purchasing the extra equipment I need without having to buy the complete packages again.
Thanks

Thanks for the link to luzerntech. They don't seem to have any T3 at the moment, but maybe they will later. (I'm a little bit surprised that Luzerntech isn't located in Luzern, Switzerland though :-)

As for the TomTom version you have: Check very carefully again. It can't possibly be called "TomTom Navigator 3 for Palm", because no such product exists. Navigator 3 is for PPC only, however the maps on the CD will install on a Palm too but that's all.

The CD should say "TOMTOM NAVIGATOR

for Palm OS".

The maps are ok, they'll work both for PPC and Palm.

However, and this is very important: You said you bought second hand. If this product has ever been in use, i.e. activated with a key from TomTom, you won't be able to use it on your device! That goes for the maps too! TomTom keeps track of all the activated products, I know because I accidentally gave the wrong product code when I was activating my European maps, I gave the code for the maps that came with TomTom and I had already activated those. And the TomTom key website told me so.

Thanks Tor, looks like I better just buy myself the new software then from tomtom then I have no problems. My T3 has been lost by the carrier somewhere between the UK and Belgium, however Luzerntech have notified me today that they have sent me a replacement, so maybe they do still have some in stock or then again maybe they only sell through Ebay as they are still showing them as available there. Here is a link to one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3732&item=5753803767&rd=1

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately they won't ship to Norway, even though they do ship to Finland,Sweden,Denmark! Go figure. Oh well, I may still bid on it -- I would just have them to ship to some friends just across the border.
