T2 Malfunction

My T2 has started to "randomly" switch between various menu items and be slow to respond when you touch the screen. I have tried soft and many hard resets and this has not helped. The only software currently on the Palm is the orginal stuff and there have been no "hacks". The problem: for example, if I try to add an appointment to the date book and click at 9 am, it jumps to maybe 6 pm and bounces back and forth between 6 pm and 5 pm and I can't do anything. Or if I get as far as trying to enter information, it will automatically jump after a little to start that "cycling" again. Does not matter what application I try to run the results are the same.

Palm tech support suggested I calibrate the screen. But, either the palm does not respond ... that is you touch the screen and nothing happens or the palm jumps from one target to the next before you can try to tap the screen.

Now if I turn it on and can usually navigate for about one minute and then it locks up ... can't even turn off the power. Another hard reset is needed just to get it back to a state where I can turn it off.

Palm's most recent suggestions was to return it to them for repair, but I don't think its worth $200 to have them look at it. Any ideas? Time to look for another PDA?
 
Do you have any sort of a screen protector on the device? Obviously if the answer is yes - then remove it.

No - then I'd suggest that something is "caught" under the edge of the screen or there is just an accumulation of dust etc that is between the screen and the underlying digitizer.

You might try those high pressured air cans used for blowing off dust on keyboards etc - turn the unit upside down and then use the air to blow out the dust etc. Don't over do it.

If that doesn't do it then you might attempt to disasemble and see if a good "air" cleaning might help. But be prepared to do this only as a last ditched effort......and if your going to spend $200 to repair then spend it to buy instead. The T2 is at least 3 years old? The longest I've seen most devices go is about 5 years, if you leave it on a shelf all day long and never use it.
 
Thanks for the advice. Yes there is a screen protector on there ... I replaced it after I started to have problems. I'll take off the new one and give that a try. If that doesn't work I'll try the cleaning routine as well. Not sure where you mean to blow ... just onto the screen and concentrate on the edges between the screen and the body? If I decide to take it apart is it just the two phillips screws on the back to remove? Any special precautions to take?
 
Blow around the edges of where the frame meets the screen....sorry I wasn't clear on that. Dust and particles will get in between there just because of normal wear and tear. If one of the particles is pressing on the screen in just the right way - it will cause the digitizer to not work properly.

There are the two screws at the top on the back - but there are two more screws hidden under the slider....so you'll have to take the four screws off (two on each side) of the slider mechanism to enable the slider to clear these other hidden screws at the bottom that are hidden.

Don't get too aggressive as the connectors are fragile ....but again this is a last resort.
 
Thanks for the clarification. I've not had a chance to try to cleaning, but right now the T2 is basically locking up every time I do get it to actually accept a screen tap. Waits a long time to respond (minute or two) and then executes a series of beeps and responses. Now it is unresponsive and power on-off wont' work either. Looks like its on its way to being a paper weight :-(

How do you access the two screws behind the slider, or how do I remove the slider? Seems that may be the way I will need to go if the external cleaning won't do the trick. Greatly appreciate your help.
 
I don't have a T2 so I was looking at my old T....there are two screws on each side of the slider mechanism on the outside rail part for a total of 6 screws that should be visible. Once you take those 4 side screws off the slider will continue to slide off and it will expose the other two screws hidden underneath.

But it does sound as if it's quickly becoming a paperweight....sorry. ;)
