And I'd rather be happy than right.
But I do think liberals throughout history have generally tried to push ahead with what's accepted socially and for more people, not just a few "acceptable" tribes or types of people.
Liberals pushed for women's right to vote in the early 20th century. Liberals want to see students exposed to more different perspectives from many walks of life rather than solely bombarded with dogma and talk of doomsday or hell.
They've fought to stop slavery in many centuries, no matter what they called their party at the time. They now don't see good reasons to forbid two consenting adults to "marry" or legally form a family relationship that may be between men or women.
However, I realize that there are obsessive types that can push some things too far. These are usually types who think in terms of all or nothing, or ones who are just overly sentimental about everybody and everything and don't realize how to set priorities, nor do they realize that some people and some issues really aren't worth their time.
I also see that it's not passe to want to be able to run your life and your business as you like without having to answer so much to meddlers, and I can see that it is modern to not want to have tobe overly taxed to pay for things that we ourselves find ridiculous. I hope that the future will find some balance in this struggle. I don't want to have to watch our govt. spend $30+ thousand a year on a criminal, but I don't think it's a waste of money to fund public education that gives all kids a well-rounded education (not just overprotection and brainwashing as in many homes).
